Cummins Engine Identification Help

Team,

I am looking at purchasing an 01 Eagle that has had the engine replaced with a Cummins motor a while back.  The current lady who owns the bus does not know if its an ISM or ISX.  In all honesty, she is more educated about engines than I am.  Is there any to identify this motor physically by engine accessories, markings or a engine ID? Any help is greatly appreciated.

There should be an identity plate on it. Depending on how old it is, it might be on the block or valve cover. For the sake of getting parts, it would be important to know the serial number and model number. An ISX should be red in color (I hauled them out of the Jamestown, New York Plant). It would be a fairly good engine, you just to watch out for cheap accessory parts, and troubles with EGR valves. I put 700,000 miles on an ISX in an International, and it was still sound when the trucking company sold it off.

Who owns the the Eagle if it is the is one I am thinking about it has a M11 Cummins

On an Eagle-as you open the door, you'll see the front of the engine. If it has what looks like two cylinder heads stacked on top of each other and you look down the block and see that it has 3 cylinder heads then it is a NTC block, if mechanical, N14 if electronic.
If you see that the valve cover is squared at the top, but with a slanted angle where it meets the head, then it is a L10, M11, or ISM.
If you see the cover for front gear train then is a ISX. Good Luck, TomC
