I am thinking about getting an engine/transmission out of a 1980 MCI9 donor bus to put into my 1986 MCI102A3.

I have a diesel mechanic taking care of the job, and I'm trying to figure out my total cost.

Any idea on how different the MCI9 is vs the MCI102A3 as far as mounting the engine/transmission?  I.e., is it (much more) extra time to put in an engine/xmission from an MCI9 into an MCI102A3 as compared to from another 102A3?  Anything I need to watch out for?

Dave no problems at all swapping out the "9" engine/trans combo at ALL!
As a matter of fact it's a very simple and quick swap as they use the same engine cradle and can be slid out of one bus and slid right back into the other with no changes or modification at all needed!

You can't ask for any easier straight forward swap should be able to remove it from the "9" in about 8 hrs for an average mechanic who doesn't specialize in buses. (I have done it in less than 4 and hear of mechanics that have done complete swaps in an 8 hr shift!)  And he should be able to put it back in the 102 in about the same amount of time now that he's experienced with what is what.

Happy to hear that.  I'm surprised, though, since the buses aren't the same width.  I guess it can't effect the engine cradle, seeing as how the engine isn't going to change size.  :)

MCI didn't change the engine cradle rails all the way thru the years from a "5" up thru the C models that I know of! Pretty sure they were the same on D models too! Once you step up from D models up all bets are off as I have no experience in pulling an engine from anything newer than a 102C3!

The cradle may vary between the different engines as far as the way the cradle mounts to the engine but the engine cradles and the "cradle rails" remain the same.
