It's hard to believe that NAVISTAR is pretty much out of the engine business now. Their diesel version of the conventional skoolie offers CUMMINS as the sole engine. Never say too big to fail.
My Carpenter/international 3800 has a Detroit Diesel engine.

Well your signature says it's the DT466. I remember back then NAVISTAR had a partnership with DETROIT and they rebadged it as the DETROIT SERIES 40. Same thing otherwise and yes, that DT466 is legendary.

See the trouble is that we live in an all or nothing society. It's either a brand new PREVOST with more features than a house or an old skoolie with no seats. I can't afford the former but can afford the later but we often forget middle ground.
My way would either buy a used stick and staple or an old skoolie, tear out the seats, throw a mattress on the floor and call it a conversion then perhaps add some more nice things to it and dream of something nicer. :)

I wonder if a nice DD371TI or 471TI would fit along with the very necessary RTO6610 Fuller?  Also don't forget the single stage Jake!  Nothing else would be necessary except new complete axles, springs, brakes wheels and tires.  New model disk brake versions naturally.  Maybe air ride and air brakes.  Maybe some inside work.  A nice truckers seat would work for the driver.  Maybe some neat Stewart Warner vintage gages .... ... ... :)
