It seems my wiper switch for my right wiper has died, the pivot has seized and the wiper motor is dead. In fact, the wiper spindle snapped too.

I'm looking around and see some horrible prices and people seem keen to tell me rubbish like they're not made any more but they have the last one in stock (convenient, costly and screams bullshit).

I'm wondering about the rear wiper motor, mechanism and wiper blade from a car. My existing wiper seems to cover around 135 degrees  on my international 3800.  Even more so since I saw wiper motors from a Volkswagen Jetta going for $25 new.

Has anybody else switched over to cheaper or more available wipers?

So you have a really great thing going in your favor. Those are 12 volt electric wiper motors right? You likely can pull some from junkyard school buses. You likely can get replacements online too. What is you year and bus model? Thomas? Bluebird? The MCI air motors are a big pain to replace or fix, (I've done it) and they are expensive to replace.

I removed the other two, so no worries.

Today using my angle grinder I removed the acorn nut from the wiper arm (Dyna brand). A lock washer dropped off. I tapped the stuck core and it dropped out together with a conical knurled gripper of some kind that was firmly rusted to the shaft. I think I've saved myself the cost of a new wiper arm and blade.

The wiper pivot is clearly toast. It seems I can't get a pivot identical to the one Carpenter installed which judging from the look of the welds on it was an in house production. Carpenters workmanship is unmistakable because of its questionable nature.

I think the pivot shaft is probably about 3 inches, estimating from the pieces.

Once I have the pivot replaced, I don't think replacing the motor is much of an issue. I can't see any reason why I shouldn't use a wiper motor from a VW Jetta since they're going for around $25. It's not as though moving a 14 inch wiper over a 135 degree arc is particularly taxing!

Take the part # of your old motor and google it!
Chances are it will pop up as available from Ebay, Amazon or some other source for CHEAP!

The wiper motor is a non issue. I can probably rig just about any wiper motor to do the job. The pivot is becoming a pain in the @$# to find. It'll have to be a generic 3 inch pivot. Just about nowhere around me does anything other than car parts which is annoying. Scrapyards would be the obvious place to look but as they never advertise, they're hard to find.

Just ordered a pivot from eBay. I'm hoping it comes with the toothed cone that engages in my dyna wiper arm. The original toothed cone won't release from the remains of the old pivot despite heating with a butane torch, whacking with a hammer and twisting with pliers.

This is what I have. I had to use my angle grinder. Does the toothed cone slide off or does it screw off? Not getting much luck.

This is the replacement pivot. It's not the same as the old one which seems to be in house by Carpenter. I'll make it fit. Question is whether I'll have to get a different wiper arm. I like having matching arms but if I have to get a new one... oh well. As far as the motor is concerned, I took the mounting plate off and it looks as though any old motor will fit. As far as switching is concerned, the old switch is shot anyway.

Well that was easy. I put it loosely on the vice and tapped the spindle with a hammer.

All I need now is for my $40 pivot to arrive. Then I'll probably go cheap and put a $25 VW Jetta wiper motor.

At the end of the day this is the right hand vanity wiper.

For the curious, this is the back end of a Carpenter wiper pivot. Looks to me that they welded the bar to the pivot.
