Will a 6000 W continuous duty generator run 2 roof ACs?? Thanks

luvrbus

No a 7000kw struggles in the heat

In theory, it should work.  6000w @ 120 volts equals 50 amps of load.  Each AC should draw less than 15 amps, so two AC's would only be 30 amps.  However, as you can see from Clifford's post, it may vary depending on how hot it really is and how accurately the unit is rated.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

You have to remember that most A/C's are rated at 85 degrees. Kick that up to 105 (which is was a couple days ago in Bishop, Ca), and you have the A/C's pulling more amps as the load is higher as the temp goes up. Plus the engine doesn't like the extra heat either. My 10kw runs 2 A/C's in 105, but will overheat if I try for all three.
When I had Dick Wright custom build my 12kw 3 cylinder genset, I had him give me a radiator that is 50% bigger than needed. Now I anticipate being able to run all three A/C's on my truck in any weather. Good Luck, TomC

That's kind of what I thought I might see if I can find an 8000 I'm looking at light towers. I know the power might not be good enough for computers. Any thoughts? Thanks

A friend of mine in the construction business started his 4-halogen-light tower up in the storage lot of his shop a few days ago.  I thought that the noise would rattle the fillings out of my teeth from 15' away.  I moved to 50' away and started getting a headache after about 30 seconds -- and I almost never get headaches.  Try it before you buy it.

Powertech makes the most compact 8kw with blow out radiator fan to the outside. Very compact and uses a 3 cylinder Kubota engine. A truck driver friend of mine had one on his truck sleeper (big ARI sleeper with everything) and had over 23,000 hours on it when he sold the truck. Only replaced the gen head once-came with a brush type generator, and replaced with a brushless-of which is what they come with now. Good Luck,TomC

Not all light towers are noisy the ones approved for Forest Service work are very quite, but they come at a price

Anything approved by the Forest Service will have spark arrestors that are something to clean out on a regular basis. If you don't, then you will lose power at some point, particularly if they have a wire mesh design.

I have run three 15K BTU rooftops on a 6,500 watt generator before, but the humidity was more an issue than heat.  It was only 85 degrees at most that time and the bus was in the shade.

I have had issues at times running my three rooftops on my 8,000 watt diesel generator.  In 107 degree heat I couldn't keep the A/C units running at all.  The units would either trip the 20 amp breaker continually, or simply shut down because the condenser could not reject enough heat.  The interesting thing is the generator was also powering a 10,000 BTU window unit that worked with no issues in the same heat.  It had a 20 amp circuit so the breaker never tripped.

If you go to auctions that sell used rental equipment you will see a lot of light towers.  I checked the United Rental light towers at the Vallejo, CA auction and they had Kubota 3 cylinder engines in light towers but were only putting out around 6.5Kw.  I called my generator supplier and he said he could boost the power up on them but the injector pumps would have to be rebuilt to put out more horsepower to 8Kw generator head.  Not worth messing with, considering the light towers worked and the contractors were buying them up at more than the engines were worth.

They don't list a price on the website.  That's usually a bad sign ...

That's why i ventured to ask here, and not call them. At least this way when the are several holy bleepedy bleeps uttered out load, there isn't some poor sales rep on the other end of the line.
