I'm on Ian's band bus helping drive some long stints.  Here are the symptoms;

Cruising at any speed, the engine stop light comes on for 20 seconds and engine dies.
Sometimes restarts in gear on 3rd or 4th try.
Sometimes you need to shift if into neutral to get it to restart.
Stop engine light flashes during failed restarts.
Oil pressure and water temps normal during this process.
Low on power went light is off.
Almost no power when light is on.
Engine shuts off when light flashes.
Engine is mechanical but must have some working alarm stat
No smoke from exhaust at all.  Used to puff when starting off under full throttle.

*May* have started with the addition of fuel conditioner about 1000 miles ago.

Open to suggestions.  Will have time to look for problems when we get to the next venue.

Thanks!

You don't say what kind of engine/transmission. Assuming it is a Detroit 2 stroke, I am guessing screwy wiring related to the shut down system. Turn the shut down cylinder away from the lever on top of the governor for now. That happened to me once. It was wiring at the Skinner valve for the shut down.

Yes, the Skinner Valve for the fuel shut-off is the first thing to check. There are two, one for fuel shut-off, and one for fast idle.

Series 60 with a HT740.  I serviced the tranny about a month ago and the engine & tranny felt great.  Good power and smooth shifts (after i changed the filters and ATF).

Thanks guys.  Id be all over the skinner valve if it were a 2 stroke!   It's getting worse as I type.

When the stop engine light is on but not flashing, if you get out of the throttle completely for about 20 seconds the light will go out and power is restored.

No codes ?  go with your gut feeling on fuel supply then check the power from the battery to the ECM

We havent counted the flashes because we're driving.

Ok, it just died again.  Stopped counting at 26 flashes.  No obvious codes.

Mine are DD 5206 and 5207

Thank you.  We've got 40 minutes to go, then we can shut it down and start looking.  Its been a long run!  Engine has quit about 50 times.

Bad, corroded grounds will shut you down. Look in the electrical panels, wherever they are on an Eagle. I had the same symptoms in a MCI D3 with S60. It was corroded grounds

We are parked at the venue.  I'll take a look back there after I defrag for a few.  Im thinking water temp sensor / switch or oil pressure shut down switch.

I'll see if I can find some fuel filters locally.  And filter wrench.  And a gallon of fuel.

I agree. Coolant in surge tank can be sucked into engine cooling loop below the low coolant sensor to trigger shutdown.  It then can expand back into the surge tank and be high enough to allow a restart.  Don't ask me how I know ;D
