hi All, I'm taking the 101 up central CA to get to Monterey, staying at a RV park in Carmel, to see the aquarium and the sights, I'm stopping in Salinas, I see there is a hwy68, that makes a more direct route to Monterey, it changes to 218 I think for a little bit, has anyone taken this route? I'll be driving the 102C3 towing motorcycle trailer, one time I ended up on a very steep grade in the area  that the GPS directed me too, don't want to do that again, lvmci...

Are you heading north or south on US 101?

Since you say "up", it would seem that you are going north on 101.  The Hwy 68 turn off (which is off of the left lane, I believe) is before you get to Salinas.  It is not mountainous and is a well traveled route toward the coast there.  If you are going to Salinas, you can take Hwy 183 west to Hwy 1 south to Monterey.  Carmel is further south though.  There is a state park called Point Lobos just a few miles further south that is quite magnificent if you have the time.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

Tom if it was me and its not I would go 101 to 156 west to 1. A lot flatter and less windy. And yes Salinis Hyway has a few steep grades not bad though 'Hill Town" for one. Look before you turn in Carmel lots of steep grades in town and one ways too. If you take the bike go to Hogs Back nice pleasant Bar with good finger food. Also "Bennett Sculptures" Lot of Bronze works, is on I think 1st street, Carmel By the Aquarium just south of it on the same street is McFly's another good eats place. ;D

LVMCI, going north on US 101 before you get to Salinas, as Lin says, take the left lane exit at Abbott Street.  Abbott Street parallels US 101, in about 1/4 mile turn left on Harris Road.  Harris Road becomes Spreckels  Avenue.  Spreckels Avenue dead-ends at US 1.  Take the on-ramp to US 1 South to Monterey.  All good flat roads, we have taken many times to go to Monterey.

Tom -

If you want to come a little further north, I'm going to be at the Santa Cruz Redwoods RV park in Felton this weekend: Friday afternoon until Monday (or maybe Tuesday.)

hi all, thanks to everyone for such great suggestions, and special thanks to RJ for the route to Palmdale/Lancaster avoiding LA proper, to get home. had a great vacation with my lady friend, riding down to big Sur on my motorcycle, with 50mph gusts, however, was quite an experience, but fun when we got there, lvmci...
