What mui motors will match up with my 740? Has anyone used a military takeout motor?

6V-92TA, 8V-92TA, 8V-71, Cummins L10, NTC855, Caterpillar 3406A or B. Both the Cummins NTC855 and Caterpillar 3406 are big block engines, like the Series 60 (only electronic). Good Luck, TomC

Remember that most different engines will require different torque converters, and different shift points in the tranny.  Whenever changing engines I always have the tranny rebuilt to match up properly with the new engine.

12V71T MUI, (if it will fit) Small Cam 855 Cummins, Big Cam 1 through 4 855 Cummins, N14 Cummins. (both MUI and electronical) All the Cummins are big tall straight 6 engines.  Probably the old 903 MUI V8 Cummins, plus many older others.  They say the 740 is pretty bulletproof.

Brian Evans will chime in, he put a military engine in his MC5.

I would do a military takeout. They are usually real clean and free of leaks and already broke in by young guys that just drive them with the pedal push through the floor.

This is the first mention of the 903 Cummins I have heard in a long time. It might fit in if a 8V92 does. The 903 was in the "10 ton" heavy tractor the Army used to haul 60 ton tanks. It was a 6X6 with a heavy PTO driven winch on the back that could pull a tank out of mud. It had dual exhaust that exited straight out in front of the rear drive wheels. It did not have a high horsepower rating (200 something) but it had torque. It was a thrill to drive; it was top dog back in the sixties.

Didn't this old mill have some following during the heavy truck hi banked circle track racing era of long ago?  If memory serves, (always suspect!) didn't Cummins have a military or marine version of this mill producing 800HP?  Yikes!

The VTA-903 Cummins V-8 is still being made for military use. The Bradley tank is built around the 903, hence the only engine that will fit. Cummins has updated the engine to 700hp and 1500lb/ft torque using electronic common rail injection. Still it is only certified for 2000hrs use. If you lowered the power, it would work. But-instead, use the Cummins ISL-RV rating of 450hp and 1250lb/ft torque.

Just like the Cummins 903 is still being made, so is the Detroit 6V-53TI, 8V-71TA, and 8V-92TA. Good Luck, TomC

Well, that is really interesting, the 903 still lives! 700 hp. would have been too much for my 10 ton, it probably would have twisted the driveshaft into a pretzel with a young driver.

To keep Ewan happy  and to prove I am still alive (current hobby is building arch top guitars, it seems, but spring is here and the bus is about to come alive again).  I indeed converted a military take out tank (self propelled howitzer, to be pedantic, as a gunner I was chuffed that I have something of an artillery piece in my bus).  The amount of work to convert a tank engine to an MCI bus engine was extreme, and I did a write-up here: http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=21836.0

Ewan, how did your friend Doug make out?  He called me for help, but I don't know what happened.

Richard, the government 8v92 engines are good engines some of those for sale lately have never been ran set @475 hp.You will need to change the auxiliary gears on the rear for your MCI, buy the truck engine with the top mounted turbo they are not hard to change over for your application

Cliff, I was looking at 92 take out from Adelman's in ohio. It has the turbo on top rated at 445 hp. Where are the 92's you're seeing?

Thanks all for the info. I've decided to stay with the 92 for ease of change.
