I have a 85 Prevost with a 8v92 with a DN/50 alternator that quit charging.I had it check out and were fairly certain the problem is in the alternator and not the regulator.
Has anyone removed the D50 and run a external alternator. AT one point it had a alternator which appears ran off the camshaft pulley, but has been removed.

Don they make the 50DN in a belt drive model if that would make your life easier? Still oil cooled though. They also make. 55SI that is belt driven and air cooled producing about 275 amps at 24 volts.

Detroit Diesel made a standard alternator bracket that bolted to the block heater plate holes and used the cam pully.  Might take some work to track one down though.

I found the bracket at Prevost, however if I remove the DN50 do they make a plate cover for that.

Don,  I also have a 85 Prevost and did just what you are talking about.   Yes they make a cover for that, if I remember correctly it is the same as one of the others back there.   I installed 2 belt drive alternators, one 12 volt and one 24 volt.  I made my own brackets and have been very happy with the belt drives.  Also you can pick what ever amp alternators you want instead of being stuck with mega-amp.

If you have the 8 inch bolt pattern 50D with the aluminum spacer they don't make a cover for it that I have ever been able to locate,I remove the planetary gear from the cam and cut one to fit

Thanks for the photos. Can you tell me what 24 volt alternator and diameter of the pulley you used. Thanks,Don

I fashioned a bracket and attached it to the lavatory frame and ran the belt to the crank pulley. I used a Delco 225 amp marine alternator and only charge my house batteries with it because I didn't want to cause any problems with the vanner thing. Could have done the same with a regular 100 amp but wanted to make sure in case I wanted to add some things later.

This probably won't help you much, but I like to hear myself type.

My '86 came to me with a reman engine, with a belt-driven air-cooled alternator.  So enough steel, rod and wire and it can be done.  Have fun.

If you have access to a HD truck junk yard, you could get the parts thee off a DDA. They used air cooled alternators on them.

The 24 volt alt. ( upper one in photos ) is a 65 amp Delco 27-SI series with a 2 1/2" pulley.  The lower part of the bracket I believe is the one Boomer was talking about that's made by Detroit.   The 12 volt has a 3 3/4" pulley.

Sixty seven, um. Is that an 8v71? 92 series?  I just don't recognize it because I've never in my life seen one so clean. That's insane.
