External starting aid.  It sets the injectors at a set opening when the engine is not running so they get fuel so the engine can start.  As soon as the engine fires, the springs and weights control the injectors.  You set it with a gauge on the control rack of one of the injectors while the engine is off.

The buffer is also on the side of the governor, you can see yours to the left and around the corner, it looks like it has a fast idle cylinder also.

It will amaze you how many people think that is where you set idle speed, they get it out of adjustment then the engine takes for ever to shut down and always tell me no I didn't turn that. Then you need to pull the valve cover to see what injector they have and find the right gauge.Looking from the front of the engine you set the starting aid on the 2nd cylinder injector on the left bank why DD chose that injector is beyond me I never figured that out yet lol but it works

Wonderful. Thank you. I read in my manual that was the starting aid now. So basically it's acting as if you are holding the engine stop level in while starting the coach. Cool.

I always feel good when I get something right and Clifford agrees with me, doesn't have to correct me...   ;D  I learned all this crap when I was building my bus engine out of a tank engine, and had to go through everything from start to finish to make it work right.   Good training, they used to say when I was in the artillery and it was cold and raining and I was standing beside a gun with cold sleet running down my neck waiting to shoot a fire mission.  No idea why I am thinking of those days 40 years ago, but I am.

Cheers, and hope it's warm where you all are.

It's more like when you start a gas engine you have the choke out, it gives the engine a good rich mixture to start with.  As soon as the engine starts, the normal governor circuits (which work on spinning weights moving levers with springs) takes over.  The engine stop lever over-rides it and makes the engine spin over at no fuel.  What that does is compress the air charge inside the combustion chambers a few spins, which creates a lot of heat and helps the fuel ignite when you release the engine stop lever and let some fuel (regulated by the starting aid) in.  That engine stop lever trick is almost like running a glow plug for a few seconds.  Heats things up and lets the party get started.

And the temps will be back mild in 2 days.... El Nino just opens and closes the door for short periods, thinking it is funny to let the odd blast of cold through.

In -28C/-19F, starting a 2007 J4500 with a Detroit and a Proheat is fine, however, with a ZF AStronic, getting the coach to warm up plodding around at city speeds doing short movements and sitting waiting....  There is no substitute for an Allison and a bigger boiler when it gets this cold...

Spoiled brat, that's what El Nino is!

happy coaching!
