inj. question ?

  I have 9290 inj. that are stuck so I pulled them out and freed up the push rod. I can't get them to spray. what needs to be done? Pushing the spring does nothing. Also, what the voltage on the elec. one. I have a set I took out over a year ago and I want to check them while I have everything set up.

Richard,are they electronic injectors I don't quite get the question the 9290 are a mechanical injector,the filters are probably plugged from setting soak those in paint thinner or acetone till it flows under pressure from the inlet to the return pushing the plunger down ? is the plunger free and working.
When you say push rod are you referring to the rack or plunger ?. The electronic type are hard to test without a stand the ECM sends a pulse to the solenoid measuring the band width metering the fuel for injection they need a constant fuel pressure and the pulse you just cannot jump power to the solenoids  they are tricky to test best to have DD check those for you

Hi Cliff, I have 2 sets of 9290 inj. I've taken 2 out of the bus because they were stuck. I freed them up with inj. cleaner and diesel. I've set up a stand to hold them and set up my 12v pump to pump diesel thru them. Flow is good thru inj. and back to bucket  I wanted to make sure they had a good spray before I replaced and have no spray when I push inj. plunger down no matter what position the rack push rod is in. Hope this is a bit clearer. I'd also like to know how to store the extra set once it's all freed up and working.


The elec inj are from an 8-92 that I took out of a running moter and have set for over a year. I have no need for them and no one wants them so I'll just throw them away.

Richard, I spray mine and run Mystery oil through the injector and store in a good zip tight bag it works for me

Does anyone know how to check the spray pattern?

Hookup a squirt bottle with diesel fuel in it. squirt fuel as you are pressing the injector down in a vice. On a piece of white cardboard.

Dave, Spray what? I have fuel going thru the body but nothing sprays out the bottom with spring depresse.

Richard, are you trying to test the pattern by just holding the plunger down ?

Cliff, yes and moving the rack rod in and out.

They don't work that way Richard run fuel through the injector and since you don't have the fixture tap on the top of the cam follower (plunger) with a rubber hammer creating a full injection stroke that creates the pop pressure, it may take a couple of blows then they will spray a rubber hammer won't hurt the injector either

You may need to restrict the flow out of the injector.

Cliff, The hammer worked (learned something new). I did have two that the spring was depressed when I took it from It's box. I tapped on the body but they wouldn't release.  One of the springs on one that sprayed was soft as I could push it in by hand. Is that bad?


azdieselman,  Can I have to much pressure?  I'm running 25 to 30 lbs.

The one you can depress by hand needs replacing,the ones stuck down just soak and use small wonder bar or screw driver and tap upwards against the plunger with a hammer it will release some time tapping harder downward will release it if the spring is good
