Im working on exhaust ideas and I was curious if any of you have done anything to make your diesel generator more human friendly.

Upgraded Muffler? - noise

Resonator? - remove the drone in a specific frequency

Diesel Catalytic Converter? - toxic exhaust

Diesel Particulate Filter? - remove the soot

Im just thinking of the diesel generator running in close proximity to breathing humans for extended periods of time.

Where is the best location to exhaust?

Ground level or roof level?

i carry 3 sections of standard expanded exhaust pipe to put the exhaust 2 feet over the top of my coach, 1 90 and two straights and cap it with an epa california approved harley davidson muffler... works well :)

The longer the pipe with a 90 bend the quieter,I killed 2 birds with 1 throw I had a pipe as tall as the bus but did it different.I ran the pipe on the side like you did with the old side pipes of years back with a slip joint then you just flipped it up when parked in a crowd no noise,sot,smoke or smell and no assembly required

my gen is in a center bay, the first pipe is actually the 90, with about an additional 30 degree bend to allow it to run parallel to the coach so in effect it has a bend greater than 90 degrees. it is ok in the quiet department. excellent in the "it's OK to go to sleep" department...

The 8kw kabota gen in our 4905 is in the rear bay, drivers side. The exhaust  exits its compartment out the floor , has a diesel jetta muffler and runs forward under the bus , 90 degree turn , straight up and out the roof.

The genset engine is so small, if you have a roof high exhaust with a healthy running engine, I doubt anyone is going to smell it. DON'T goof with DPF, or catalytic converter, or DEF or any of that Horsey crap. Unless your system is factory installed on a new unit, you wouldn't believe the problems emission controls have. I deliberately bought my genset years ago to avoid having electronic controls. Good Luck, TomC

My generator is all ready installed so instead of all the rerouting and mufflers I just bought myself the high altitude turbo kit (compensator turbo) for the Kubota from a used BobCat loader.I like the light whistle sound of a turbo on the small engines.

I don't really see why people worry about the generator bothering the neighbors unless it's just wore out and smoking.

People don't care about you when they fire up the noise and stinking AquaHot or other diesel fired heaters to me those are the most annoying and stinking things ever made nothing like a helicopter sound parked next to you and the smell of raw diesel at 2 am when 1 fires off LOL and yes I have one

Interesting point, how important is a turbo on a diesel generator for high altitudes? Im guessing no more than 5psi?

They dont make a kit for my engine but im sure something like a Garret GT15 could be an easy project.

Did you have to increase the size of the injectors in the pump?

We have am MCI-9.
The gen is in the AC bay drivers side.
The gen is mounted on air bags like the bus BUT much smaller.
The exhaust goes down thru the floor in a flex pipe thru a 90 then about 3 ft later thru a muffler.
About 5 ft later thru a sweeping 90 up thru a 6" steel electrical conduit to the roof.
The electrical conduit is centered around the exhaust pipe to help with any heat issues from the pipe.  This system works like a chimney for pipe heat.  At the roof is goes thru a 95* sweeping elbow.
This is pretty quiet and the exhaust is above the roof.
The air bags keep the gen motion and vibration from conducting to the bus floor.
WE like it a lot.

My 8kW diesel genset sits in the rear baggage bin, driver's side - basically where your coach battery box is on the 4106.

Exhaust exits thru the floor into a 90 facing the rear of the coach, then another 90 about 4" before the rear baggage bin's rear vertical bulkhead, into a muffler which exhausts in front of the rear wheel between the wheelwell opening and the rear edge of the bin door.

Going down the road, that's where it ends. 

When parked, I have a vertical stack that I made with parts from O'Reilly's and Home Depot for less than $50.  It's made up of an standard 1 1/4" exhaust pipe elbow to make the 90 which slides into an electrical conduit coupler mounted to the genset's exhaust pipe, then two five-foot sections of 4" double-wall stove pipe.  I made a simple little "U-shaped" bracket held on to the stove pipe with a stainless steel band clamp, this bracket hangs on the coach's drip rail to support the stack.  Works very, very well.

For travel, the stack disassembles and I hang it from the ceiling of the front baggage bin with a couple of bungee cords hooked to two eye bolts screwed into the wood floor.  KISS principle!
