HI Guys,
It's been a really long time since I posted here. A LOT of life has gotten between my and my scenic. But, my wife and I took a mini vacation last Labor day and spent time with some old friends. It was great and really renewed and got me back on track with several things.
Spent the last couple weeks getting a lot of loose ends taken care of and have made all new battery cables, new battery tray, replaces several hoses and on & on.
I've drained the oil and need to get new oil back in.
I can find Shell Rotella 40 wt, but have to order it. Reg price is 18.26, but if I order 8 gal or more, cost is 17.22.
I was over at Walmart and Orschlens, and Rotella 30 wt is around 13.25 a gal.
QUESTION - What is the down side of running straight 30 wt as compared to 40 wt.
I have a 8V92TA engine in my Scenicrusier.
Thanks,
Mike

well if you run the motor in sub freezing the 30 is ok
but if you run in egg frying weather, well then you want the 40.
you can get the 40 here for 16$

fwiw Walmart stocks the 40W as well, but sometimes only hold it seasonally, ie., 30 in the fall/winter, 40 in the spring/summer.  Not all Walmarts have it, more likely to have it in stores near areas that have forestry, etc.. machinery.
Some may question the quality of this oil, but it has the right specs on it (actually don't know what the ash content is), and it is probably better than the oil around when my engine was built.

I get mine from Tractor Supply if they do not have it stock they will order it for you. I think I paid about $16 or $17 a gallon in Cottonwood, AZ

I can get the DD brand 40wt from my local DD for $75 a pail.  Haven't found 40wt cheaper anyplace else.

I often check prices at the DD dealer. They are often quite competitive.

Same with VW. I get my oil and filters from the VW dealer for the Jetta. Cheaper than any auto parts stores. Their service rates are sky high though.
