Speaking of re-powering 5Cs lately, does anybody know what engines would fit in a 5C, other than the 6V71 and 6V92?

8V-71, 8V-71 T etc, 8V-92, S50 with some work.  I think most of the 6 cylinder four stroke truck engines are too long.  Recall that a 4 stroke engine runs a lot cooler than a 2 stroke, so you can easily contemplate raising the roof of the engine compartment.  If I was doing a repower I would probably look hard at the S50 unless I stumbled on a NOS rebuilt 8V-71T for next to no money.   ;D  I measured, and a S50 will fit.  You'd have to think about how to get the valve cover off, though.

Either the 6.7 Ford Powerstroke or GMC/Chevrolet 6.6 liter Duramax V-8 would get her down the road since both have ratings in the 800lb/ft torque now. Unfortunately, U.S. has no V-6 Diesels currently being made. The only other way would be to extend the back a couple feet. Good Luck, TomC

Brian, are you saying that the S50 would fit without raising the blower compartment floor? How about length? In terms of what transmission could be used. I have seen MC7s with the S50, but the engine compartment is bigger than in a 5.

A  L10 Cummins will fit, they are not good engines but there is a MCI 5 running around with V555 Cummins I haven't seen in years but it was out there with a turbo

The 6.7 Powerstroke is a great engine, in a pick up. I have one and like it. I don't know about it in a bus... Although when you think about it, with a 18000 lb goose neck hooked on to the truck, it is getting close in weight to a bus...

They sell low clearance valve covers for 50 series,I removed 1 from a Eagle that had those

Why reinvent the wheel, just use a 8V71N with A timing and 70 injectors.  With updated rads of course.

When I was in SC at one of Kyle's non-rally's there were a bunch of MC-9's with S50's.  I measured carefully, it would fit with about an inch of clearance.  Obviously you can lower it a bit when you fabricate the engine mounts.

I know that Detroit made an interesting low profile oil pan for the 4-71 (and most likely other models). It had two oil pumps, one in the front and one in the rear with a low pressure cut out valve to allow the oil pump with the most pressure to do the pumping. Worked in high tilt type applications-like dozers, military vehicles, etc. I don't know if the S50 has a low profile oil pan since it has twin counter rotating balancing shafts in the crank case. Good Luck, TomC
