Is there any trick to pulling the spicer 4 speed manual trans on a 4106?  I'm helping someone who broke down on the road yesterday.  I'm not sure what broken specifically yet but his flywheel is disconnected from his engine.  We are trying to pull the trans but with the flywheel not tucked away into the accessory housing as it's supposed to be we can't get the trans to come out.  I got a ratchet strap to hold the flywheel back from falling out and the input shaft is free but it's just not clearing to pull out,  it does come out turned correct?  With the bell housing turned towards the bumper?  We tried it turned at a partial angle and straight with no luck. We have removed everything the books says and the picture in the book shows it coming out at an angle.  And Luke said it comes out twisted with towards the bumper.  Anyway it just been a big fight with the bulkhead opening curving in on all the corners.  We are regrouping for another try in the morning. Any photos of one coming out would help.

Can you put the trans in gear, rotate and remove the bolts holding the pressure plate... take it all... maybe the clutch splines are twisted ?

Throw out bearing cobbled... ??

Just a thought...seen it happen... ???

The starter gets tied up in that mess most of the time and the fly wheel welds it's self to the input shaft,me I spend a little time remove the bumper and tilt the engine towards the rear and remove it btw in your 71 manual you find instructions on adding bolts to the crank to prevent it from happening again.

I hate to tell you this but you could be trying to bring part of the crankshaft out also they break the crank and the bolts hold the fly wheel on the end journal I hope that is not the case but it happens

Ignorance was holding it up.  :)

Clutch arm around the lower back side was caught between the block and bulkhead

Pressure plate is broken as well and that's more than an inch thick of steal.   Impressive

Yea Scott, a rested mind and body after a good night's sleep works good. Glad it worked.

I've got a bunch of pix on bus grease monkey website. It's too complicated to post pix here and if I link them they are full size vs the thumbnails that appear on BGM.  But here is one pix of the carnage
