Time-Serts are a better option than a Heil-Coil in your case IMO

Could be a 3/8 American sae or std thread would be easier if I remember 8mm is 5/16th and 9.5mm is 3/8th in American conversions

Thanks, guys. Will Time-Serts thread deep into the hole? The inserts I see on the Amazon site appear to have stop collars.

I've never used a time-sert, but I've used helicoils bunches of times.
Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a problem with them.

Good luck with the repair!

As cliff says, you may be able to change threads to 3/8-16 and not need to use a helicoil; just a uss tap.

Finally got new pump installed this morning. No problems so far, but all I've done is idle a while and top coolant.

I used a Helicoil insert with red Loctite and a shorter bolt. 45mm rather than 60. The tap I had was simply not long enough to make the 60mm bolt work. Let the Loctite cure overnight before installation. Other than the stripped threads, it was a simple job.

I'll get her on the interstate in the next couple days and see if we spring any leaks. Looking forward to seeing if this fixes the phantom coolant leak I've had for months.

Nothing is ever straightforward. This morning I discovered that I had no coolant. Limped the bus about ten miles to a friends shop. There we were able to get underneath and find the hose that had been worn thin by an adjacent hydraulic hose. Silicone hose about 1-1/4" ID. Apparently goes to driver's heat/defrost. Repair was a galvanized, barbed coupling with two clamps. We also sleeved the hydraulic line with a piece of hose. Hours later, the expansion tank is still full. Yay!

While I was there, we also found where my hydraulic fluid is leaking. A rotating fitting that allows the hydraulic cooler to swing away from the radiator is seeping. First of the week I'll find what that looks like on the inside.

The water pump appears to be performing flawlessly.

Yeah, "nothing is ever straightforward" is pretty much the basic secret to the Universe.  Did you use the clamps with the "spring" external tighteners?  If not, you're asking for leaks with silicone hose down the road,  It works like a treat with consistent, firm clamp pressure but over time and with thermal expansion/contraction, it almost inevitably leaks at joints like the galvanized coupling you're describing.  The external spring clamps (pricey, but whutchagonnado?) stop that.

Did not, Bruce, but I will since you informed me. Do you have a link to a source?

Thanks for the info.

Yep.  (I noticed that the list price on the ones from Amazon are north of $20 ... IME, that's about average.  Sorry, but they're GOOD clamps.)
