Are these fuel crossover tubes worth $87?   http://www.ebay.com/itm/DETROIT-DIESEL-6V92-6V71-671-FUEL-LINES-JAKE-BRAKE-FUEL-LINES-23511853-/251666588887?hash=item3a987f64d7&vxp=mtr   It looks like they have flared ends  -  didn't Detroit change to an O-ring design?   I don't want to buy them if better ones are available.   Are crossover tubes for Jake brakes different than tubes for non-Jake heads?   I don't have my engine's Parts Catalog here to look up the original tubes' part numbers.

Thanks, John

Those are indeed new flared end fuel tubes.  Yes, DD went to O-ring style but to change you also need to change all the input and output nipples on the injectors and all of the fuel stand pipes that screw into the head.  If I had flared tube style I would just buy new flared tube style if I had a leak.  Yes, jake brake tubes are different.  Are they worth $89.  If you don't have a leak, probably not.  If you want spares, yes.  If you have a leak and don't know which one, surely yes.

OK, thanks.   I'll double-check that my injectors are the O-ring type.   I was thinking of getting a set of tubes because I need to service my Jakes, and if any tubes were weeping I could change them out at the same time.   I know none of them are leaking badly because my last oil analysis did not indicate fuel in the oil.   If they're the O-ring type and they were weeping, shouldn't new O-rings take care of it, unless the tubes themselves were cracked?

Do the crossover tubes have to be taken off to service the Jakes?

The O rings are 3/16' size 008, any rubber that is fuel resistant should do.  You don't have to take the pipes off to take the Jake heads off, I don't think.  If you don't disturb them they will probably be fine, if you do I would change they out.  Make sure they come out with the tube, they have a tendency to stick inside the fitting and fall apart if they are real old.

Very seldom will the o-ring type tube break but the o-rings type will leak after time and yes you remove the tubes to remove the Jake's housing makes life easier and then you know the o-rings are new

Good, a dozen O-rings is better than buying new tubes!   Now I just need to get a Pac Brake tune-up kit 69201 (it's half the price of the Jake 17056 kit), but before that I'd better check I can get my driver-side valve cover off!   It's really close under the radiator inlet pipe and next to the exhaust, so it may need some persuasion to get it off.   I really don't want to mess with trying to separate a completely-rusted exhaust joint there.   Stainless exhausts look really good at this point!
