I goofed up

Hello All.  After doing an oil change on Honeysuckle Roses' genny, I made the mistake of firing up the genny before reconnecting the exhaust head pipe where it attaches to the muffler. It didn't occur to me that the hot exhaust was being directed at the foam insulation under the bus floor--until I saw the puckering and shrinkage of the insulation. I replaced the damaged insulation and then built a steel shroud to cover the muffler and head pipe where they run under the floor. The heat shield leaves about 2" air space between itself and the under floor insulation and I'd like to add a little insulation to protect the insulation if that makes any sense.

I went to the junk yard and tore up a bunch of carpet in the area just above the catalytic converter on an early 2000's Chevy PU where I found a little white blanket of some material exactly over the converter but nowhere else. I'm guessing it is some wazoo kind of low thermal conductivity material (low K value), but I have no idea what it really is. In your travels have any of you encountered this material? If so, what are its specs? What's it made of? Jack

Heat Shroud. 

This is the material I found over the cat.  It was soaked in antifreeze so I washed it.  I wonder what that did to it?

Cannot help you on that Jack.  Down in Florida a few years ago, headed north, and I noted a lot of smoke coming out of the generator compartment.

Same deal you were talking about, excessive heat/generator exhaust.  Long lonely hot trip back to Oklahoma, had to do most of it after dark.

The white stuff is called roll board it's sold by Engine Heat Protection (EHP) of Temecula Ca and a advertiser here on the BCM. I have a roll if you need a piece and it is made of cotton I understand good stuff

Thanks luvrbus,  I found EHP under industry links and I'll give 'em a call for more specifics.  How did you use the product?

Opus, it does turn out to be a ceramic blanket according to EHP's web site.

We have been out four times this year, longest 3500 miles.  Had an accident in my shop and have been shut down for about two weeks with an infection.  Next one will be October ... 620 miles down to the Gulf for some seafood and then home.

If you're looking for insulation for the exhaust/protection EHP is supposed to be good stuff. But you have a lot of options. Any kind of exhaust wrap self adhesive engine foil insulation will work to protect the foam insulation from heat. If the EHP doesn't work out for you (can't imagine why it wouldn't) post back here and I can post some other options.

Flame retardant ceiling tile above heat source.  Lowes or other box stores. Plus exhaust wrap.
