What are upgrading from, that is one noise, vibrating and heavy generator I would save the money and go for something more modern JMO that one is from the 80's and Cummins may not support it any longer

And it does something else unusual  -  "This would be a good machine for home backup heat and power or for charging solar panels for an off grid system".   I'm still trying to understand the "charging solar panels" thing!   Maybe it adds power back to the sun?

Mind you, I shouldn't be surprised at anything made by a company with that name:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onan#Biblical_account   And then Onan is bought by Cummins . . .

Been an Onan dealer for 40+. Yrs. that modem is the MDJB or E, not made for about 25 yrs, parts are becoming difficult, they shake due to both Pistons travel u / down together, so. Has a huge counter weight on crank, not smooth, if you know diesels and are extremely lucky, your still taking a chance.  The good part, they worked good.
Pix does not show key model info.
Good luck

I have the air cooled version of this generator for home back up power. It is a 6kw DJB. It is as loud as a Cummins big cam 400 running at 1800rpm. Course, the water cooled version will be quieter. But as said before, it is an older unit, not many parts made anymore. But it does have an excellent brushless alternator end.

Do yourself a favor, buy a new unit with a water cooled Kubota, Yanmar, Isuzu, etc engine instead. Generators is one area you should not scrimp in price. When all else fails, having a good dependable generator is second to none. Good Luck, TomC

I'll be the dissenting voice.  I think that unit is overpriced but if you could find one at $1,000 or $1,200 I wouldn't be afraid of it.  We've got that unit in our boat and a DJB as a home backup.  The only part I've had any difficulty sourcing is the stop solenoid.  They are dead simple machines, rugged and reliable.  Like Tom said, the DJB is noisy beyond belief but it works.
