OK long story short I am trying to get my title changed over on my 1992 Neoplan "BUS" to a motorhome before getting too far into my conversion!
I want to be able to put license plates and insurance on it before I get into the conversion so that it will be legal to mive it from place to place for various different projects of the actual conversion.

But out local tag office (while trying to be very helpful) still has NO CLUE and keeps referring me to the main DMV office in Nashville.
And no matter HOW MANY times I tell the person on the phone that it is a motorcoach and I am in the process of converting it into a "MOTORHOME"! They always come back to "Sir your VIN comes back as a 1992 Neoplan BUS and so it will need to be registered and insured as a "non-commercial" bus for your purposes!"

I know there has to be a way to change it as I know many people in other states have successfully done it!

I just need SOMEONE who has done so in TN to help guide me down the right path so I can help the people at the main DMV office realize it has and can be done!

biff,
If you don't mind my asking what county did you do yours in and about how long ago? That will help me try to get answers like you got!
Our office is always very helpful but whoever they called told them "That he (I) has to do it like a home built trailer and then call Nashville when ready and they'll have to send an inspector out to inspect it and then sign off!

But NOBODY can tell me just how much of it has to be done before I can get my inspection.
Even though I keep telling them it's going to be a work in progress and I need to get it legal to drive in order to move it from one location to another for the different stages of the conversion!

Here in wy, they told me to just leave it and it won't hurt anything. I haven't done that yet but I'm not seeing a reason to change it from non commercial bus. Why is it that you want to change it?
Just curious...

I want it titled & registered as a MOTORHOME!
For several reasons.
A. INSURANCE is cheaper on a MOTORHOME or RV than a BUS!
B. I don't ANY goofy uninformed and under educated LEO (law enforcement officer) confusing it with a commercial bus!
C. As long as it is titled as a MOTORHOME it does not require a CDL! If it is a bus and "could" seat more than 15 peole some lame LEO could again try to confuse it with a CDL required bus!
D. THAT IS THE WAY I WANT IT!

It really is important to have it registered correctly as a RV to avoid problems down the road, big mistake to leave as a bus Eric

Register it as an RV. Make sure you tell them it is an RV not a motorhome. There is a difference,it can be registered as an RV with RV plates. In order to register it as a motorhome you have to meet motorhome  Class A, B or C requirements... http://changingears.com/rv-sec-learn-type-a.shtml
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_recreational_vehicles. The reason I know this is I tried to register a bus once as a Motorhome and was told it didn't have the right equipment. I went round and round with the DMV and got very frustrated. I took the bus to another DMV in the same state where I found someone who knew what they were doing. He gave me the form to register it as an RV and in no time I had it registered.

HUGGY is registered as a house car.  That is the old term of a traveling home.

In Georgia the counties do most of the title changes and the collection of state ad valorem tax on behalf of the state.  On the titling side, the software belongs to the state but is used in the field by the county personnel.  I've had two buses changed over from bus to motor home in this county.  On both, the administrative supervisor had to place a call to a software support person at the state to get a manual edit in the software to change it over.  It wasn't an ordeal though.  It only took them about 15 minutes to get it done.  But, we have an excellent tag/title division in my county.  They completly understood what I was doing and wanted to help.  This was the complete opposite of a county I lived in 15 years earlier.
