Jack handle up or down

Need to press out a shaft horizontally on some equipment using a bottle jack.  I've done this procedure on my Eagle bogie axle arm before, but I can't remember if I put the jack handle valve in the up position or the down position to keep it from cavitating air.  Anyone remember which way?

Thanks, David

Got it done.  Handle valve on the side.  Took lots of heat on the bearing race, but we got the shaft through the bearing.

Thanks for the help
