The DEF inventors forgot water will freeze, I have seen some of those frozen before big $$$$$ for repairs I think they freeze at around 15 degrees

At least at Freightliner, if the DEF does freeze, the engine will still run until the fluid melts. Usually no damage to the system.

The engines now are the most fuel efficient than ever. With 36,000psi tip pressure (Series 60 had about 25,000psi) and endless timing possibilities with common rail fuel injection, the only way we're going to see better fuel mileage is a radical re design of the engines. Maybe opposed piston... Good Luck, TomC

To the best of my knowledge,Cummins and Navistar are the only motors available for motor homes now .The Navistar is being used in motor homes 36 ft or less and Cummins is being used in the larger motor homes. The Navistar does not need DEF.

The guys with the 6.7 Fords are complaining that the DEF tank takes away from diesel capacity.  Single tank Fords already had a glorified Pepsi bottle for a fuel tank - making it any smaller seems impossible.  I assume on the OTR trucks that DEF is a separate tank which doesn't reduce fuel carrying capacity

Its the last thing but its still on the list.

My old MCI MC7 (Low Tide's bus now) still has the factory alcohol injector on it unless Mike has removed it. I used it a number of times when I traveled in cold climates.

For those of you running LED lights make sure you use the new DOT 2.6 approved synthetic blinker fluid! ::)

We have added a lot of things just to be able run the def fluid. I'm told that in my 2012 Duramax there is a 12v tank heater that comes on in the def tank when the temp is less than 30d. Because the def fluid in the lines would freeze, there is also a pump that sucks the def fluid from the line back to the tank on shutdown, again when the temp is 30d or less. When you start the motor, another pump refills the lines. What could possibly go wrong?

Dave,

I did not see someone directly answer your question. DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is used is most (all?) modern diesel engines. It helps the engines meet the EPA requirements so we don't all die from the soot that the old engines can put out.

That help?

DEF fluid is used in all big truck diesels since 2010. I think in pickup diesels since then also (possibly 2011).

Construction equipment is the only thing I know of that isn't exclusively running DEF

We looked at a new Foretravel friends purchased the thing had a 15 gal DEF tank for the Cummins engine, air brake fluid is a antifreeze and rust inhibitor I don't think you can buy air brake fluid in CA because it causes reproduction problems in trucks and buses according to prop 65  ::)

FCCC (Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation) is using the DD13 at 470hp and 1650lb/ft torque in the high end motorhome rear engine chassis.
Setra buses uses the OM471-which is the Mercedes-Benz version of the Detroit DD13. Good Luck, TomC
