4104 generator gas tank

Hey Guys ,
I have a Onan 4000 watt generator that came with the bus , I took it out of the compartment and got it running .

The PO had 2 gas cans mounted in the compartment for the gen. to run off of which I would like to avoid if I can. I found the original gas tank that must have been in there for the original AC  was still intact in the bus and had maybe 2 gallons of stale gas in it and the feed tube from the tank going right into the compartment. I was able to pump out the old gas.

Has anyone used this tank for their gen?
I know I need to flush it out. The filler neck is still there too on the other side.
I don't think there is a gas gauge for it, unless I didn't find it yet.

Thanks, Nelson

Fuel gauges were an option that was rarely ordered on the 4104s, and even then it was only for the main fuel tank.  If it was ordered, then you'd find it inside the main tank's access door to the right with a momentary on/off switch to activate it.

The OEM A/C pony engine fuel tank on the bulkhead behind the front axle holds, IIRC, 25 gallons.  In their revenue service days, these tanks would be refilled at various depots on the coach's run.  Early production '04s had gas pony engines, later production used diesels.

It's not uncommon at all for '04 conversions to use the pony tank to fuel the genset.

The gas generator on our 4104 runs off the pony engine fuel tank. The PO even went so far as to vent the exhaust to the engine compartment area.

Thanks RJ and Siberyd, thats useful info to know , I will see if I can use the tank for my generator , 25 gallons should be enough.  Nel

My pony tank is supposed to have a leak in it.  I am going to have to find out at some point, because I would like to use it for my generator as well.

I also used the AC motor gas tank on my Silverside.  The Silverside tank capacity is 15 gallons.  It serves as diesel gen and Webasto fuel tank now.  I pulled it, repaired and refurbished before using.  Perfect location for a gen tank, use it.  Might want to pull it and clean and test it good though since you will be using gasoline.
