4104 Windshield Install

Is the rubber retainer on the windshield supposed to be in the inside or the outside?  Looking at the manual it seems like it should be on the inside, but the old one is on the outside. 

Also does anyone know where to get the retainer rubber?  I am a little short to do the whole thing.

   You're talking about the little filler strip? It goes on the outside. Any glass company should have some. Make sure you cut it about 1 inch too long and work the excess in; otherwise it'll be short in a couple of months

OK, so it is right that it is on the outside.  Cool deal.  I will have to see if the local auto glass place has any more of the spline so I have enough.  I was going to pay someone to do it, but the people I have talked to want WAY too much money for an hour and a half worth of work.

The little side window looks harder than the windshield.

Vern, you probably already know this -- but there's a special tool that will help put the spline in.  When I was managing bus companies, I saw a lot of windshields go in -- tool (and soap) made a big difference.  I believe Snap-on used to carry them, but a quick internet search turned up other sources.  However, tool seems to be specific as to the size of the spline. 

Maybe your source for spline could also be a source for the tool (buy or rent).

Amazon has some tools, but I am going to check local first.  They are pretty cheap and don't look that hard to machine either.

Now the side window behind the door, that looks like it might be a little harder to do, but I have the glass and I have the gasket so, I might just try it.

I did find that I have 2 windshield gaskets, don't know if they are the same or not.  I have a lot of interesting parts that were in the basement.

Have you checked for goodies in the spare tire storage spot behind the front bumper yet?

Not yet, from under the bus I could see the rim for the spare tire was there, don't know if there is any rubber on it though.  I guess I should go pull that huh?

Nope, no goodies in the spare tire box, just a very old and bald spare, some rust, and some spiders.

Your windshield has a 2 piece molding, where the lock strip is separate. Take a look at the one piece molding where the lock strip is attached to the main part. I think it is a much cleaner look than the old style.

Yeah, the local glass guy said that the one piece is the way most things are going these days, but I have all of the stuff for the 2 piece right now, so I hate to not use it.
