Hi Bill,

No filters in the hole. If anything a screen will keep the rodents out. Your regular maintenance should include

cleaning out the radiator of dirt and dabre. A gen running hot will give you the same symtoms as you posted.

My Honda gen is in a box and exhausts heated cooling air out the bottom. Maybe yours does the same thing? If true, the dust and dirt may be getting into the hole when  the gen is not running.

Yes,  my gen is in a box also.  I will do as Nick suggested, put a screen over it.  Maybe a way to close it when not in use, OTR.  Sure is dusty.  Can't be good.

If the dust is in the cooling air exhaust it will be blown out anytime the gen is running so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it is in the air intake side then is the time to worry.
