After the trip to the outer banks come to the blue ridge mountains. North Carolina is one of the most diverse states there are from the coast to the mountains.

Blue ridge Parkway has some of the best campgrounds to be at in the summer. No water ,electricity or sewer but you do not need any of these . average temp. is about 70 degrees.
Sleep with the windows open and the breeze blowing through.Wake up with deer in your campsite.

uncle ned nailed the BRP. Has to be one of the most beautiful roads in the world, and it cuts through my Hillbilly homeland.

(Can almost see the BRP from my bus.)

P.S. North Carolina has a little known law requiring all residents living west of Hickory, and whose family has been in the state for at least five generations, to display prominently in their yard a car up on blocks. Since we try to be model citizens, we always have at least four.

If you do the BRP know that its slow moving and your getting nowhere fast.  It'll take you an hour to go 25 miles but its absolutely amazing and worth it if you have never been.  Keep in mind it runs across the mountain tops so fuel up before you get up there cause its about an hours drive to get back down off the BRP into civilization.

Nobody takes the Parkway to go fast. That would just be silly.

True, but the biggest worry that I'd have in a bus is the limited overhead clearance on a number of tunnels and underpasses.  I think that some of them are down in the 11'8" range.  Sorry I don't have a publication to show how many or where they are.  The road wasn't made for commercial vehicles and this is one of the clearest examples of this.

Thats the reason for a good 04. Have had HUGGY from both ends of the parkway.

The only one that is close is the last one before the end at Cherokee.

I think it is 11.5 but it is measured at the edge and the tunnels are round high in the center.

Very few weeks go buy that HUGGY is not up there. Good cool nights and only a few miles away.

well guys, this has been a great thread, i've got a lot of great info.  it looks like we will be in the outer banks Aug 9-15 and in Raleigh area, (Youngsville) Aug 3-8.

I am currently replacing all the coolant hoses and have to get the shaft on my fan drive pillow block repaired, then am replacing 6 tires.....if all this happens as planned, we will be there! Looking forward to connecting with some of you.

Thanks for all the advice, we are going to try Camp Hatteras if they have availability.

We stayed at Camp Hatteras, they staff was great as well as the site itself! Wish we could be there with you folks. We plan on possibly getting that way in a couple of years.....wife wants to see Oregon and Washington State before we head on back to Hatteras.

I have some out of state commitments in August so I'm not sure where I'll be (and pretty sure it won't be OBX, as much as I'd like it to be) but if y'all are getting a cup of coffee in the Triangle area, let me know; I'd sure like to drop in.
