I just swapped out my 8D batteries for a pair of Group 31 batteries for starting my 8V-71.  It's an MCI and has a 24 volt system.  My question is can I/should I stick with a pair of batteries, or will I need to go to four batteries ( not sure if four will fit in the stock trays).

Thanks, Brian

2 31s has worked really good for my 5C. Even in cold weather when I have had to crank several times to get it started. And I can always join them with the house bank with a switch, but haven't had to do that. Also, you could always run the generator for a few minutes to give the starts batts enough juice to start you engine. My genny has its own battery with its own charger so it is always good to go.

PS and OT: how was your trip with the race car trailer?

Trip was good, that you very much.  I just posted a note about that trip.  I lost one of the 8D's, it had only 10 volts after charging so a cell was toast, kind of the day I left so I didn't count it as a failure on the trip.  I just bridged in the house batteries and away I went.  I bought the Group 31's at a roadside truck parts place I know and installed them when I got to the race track.

Only been using 2 in our 5A for the last 8 or 9 years now. Located in the stock battery box up front.
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Hi Brian, there are group 31s with very high CCAs, 1050 and 1100, mine is 950 and it has been enough in the south west, but they evaporate faster being physically smaller. I also replaced my bay cables with sets from Interstate Battery, I think it was $80 for all 4, lvmci...

Power is power, two 31s are the same wattage no matter if in series or parallel, 12 or 24 volts - all the same.
