I forgot I had these...  pics of the insides of a MCI Spicer 4 speed 8844 gearbox.

First one shows (top to bottom) the input gear at the top, also used as the direct drive fourth, the sliding splined hub that locks the gear to the main shaft, third gear and to the left is the layshaft.  Second one shows third gear at the top of the picture, second gear, the sliding hub with straight cut teeth that does double duty as part of reverse gear, and first gear, to the left is the reverse idler gear that slides to engage reverse.  You can also see the layshaft along the bottom left.  The first/second sliding hub (second from the bottom with the straight cut teeth) happens to be slid down to engage first gear in the picture.  You can see the very small teeth that the sliding hub slides over to lock the gear to the main shaft.  Those tiny teeth are what grind when you mis-time a shift.  The size and spacing of the teeth are why this Spicer 8844 box should always be shifted with the double-clutch.  Transmissions designed to shift without the clutch (like truck transmissions) have larger, coarser teeth (also called dogs) to lock the hub to the gear.
