How many here just exchange the bottles the reason for asking Rhino and other charges for 20# I noticed today when I exchanged 2 for the grill one had 15.3 lbs the other was 16.1 lbs a little shy for a 20# bottle read the label it pissed me off

Many of the new propane bottles with interior check valve won't allow the full 20lbs. I have a 20gal chassis mounted tank, and even after running it out, can only put in 16 gal even though it is rated at 20 gal. It used to be you could pack in more then the tank-but now with the built in check valves, no more. Good Luck, TomC

I never have a problem getting the 20# in a bottle with the OPD valve fwiw,they Blue Rhino says it is 20# but you don't get 20 lbs, the weight is on the label how much is in the tank If you are paying for 20 lbs that is what you should get IMO TomC,

I just paid 80 bucks for 22 gal here in Tx Paso which I complained to the guy about his price lol,exchanging the bottles I paid almost 6 bucks a gal ,at the propane place I paid $3.69 a big difference to me and that is his bottle price also

The tank ratings are "nominal" and don't really reflect what they will hold.  I always think in terms of gallons anyway.  Before OPD, my 10 gallon tanks would take 9+ from empty.  Now with OPD, they take less.  However, since I do not exchange the tanks, I only pay for what they put in the tank.  Charging for more than they are giving you sounds like a scam.

I won't be exchanging tanks anymore   easy for me with the math propane weighing 4.2 lbs per gal paying for 5 gals and getting 3.5 gals it stinks

My 40# (10gal) bottle holds 9.3 gals from completely empty. It's OPD. It's my portable tank so I don't have to move the bus every time I need LP.

All of the propane exchange companies are reasonably clear that you are not getting a full 20 pounds.  They got sued some years back for not completely filling the bottles so now they label them with the weight.  The label on the bottle lists the weight of the propane.

Those retail exchange places reduced 20 lb bottles to 15-18 lb years ago, about '05 as I recall. It was stated in very small print!

It was the usual "keep the same container and reduce the contents" bull that is so common for groceries today!

So I always refill my own 20 lb bottles to whatever I wanted, usually 4.7 - 5.0 gal.

Clifford,you have two more propane tanks setting in front of your shop ones about half full.....no charge...lol

I have made many mistakes over the years, but getting rid of all LP Gas everything including tanks was a wonderful event.  Between the cost of LP, high useage and few places to obtain it and the pain in the neck in general, removing it 100% was one happy day, total diesel for everything even the Aqua Hot.
Once you know exactly the hourly burn rate and you find the LP takes nearly 3 times the diesel to do the same job.  I played this generator game with gasoline, lp Gas and then diesel, all on the same bus and same electrical load, LP 26.4 gal day, gasoline 18 gal day vs the diesel 10 gal day.  At the time LP on the road was $3.50 gal vs diesel $.95.9 gal  Was clear to me.

I don't use the exchanges any more. The only reason I ever did was to get rid of the old valved bottles when they wouldn't fill them and wanted to charge you an
arm and a leg to change the valve. Exchanged them for new bottles with new valves, full of propane. Now I take them and have them filled. I have 40# bottles
in the bus, so don't use the 20#ers much any more. Only when cooking on them, which is not very often.
