blew the inside drive axel tire today!

Blew the inside drive Axel tire.  On I40 today.  We are safely parked outside a truck stop now.  Waiting on the tire guy.  Looks like all my drive Axel tires are weather checked and need replacement. 

I am not sure if this setup is normal but here is what I have

Drive Axel tires 12r 22.5 Lth
Tag Axel tires 315/80 22.5 Lth
Steer tires 295/75r22.5 lrg

For now I am replacing it with the same 12r22.5 but when I buy all new drive tires ($$$$$) what should I have?

I didn't mean to but I realize the investment I am about to put in tires and want to make the best decision I can.

I did what some other folks have done. I went to 11r22.5 tires. They run a few more revs per mile and the speedo is off by just a couple mph at highway speeds, but the price was about half per tire

When I have to finally replace tires I will probably go to 11R-22.5, since they are near to the right size and can support the weight.  It (and mine) would probably do better ride and tire life wise with 12R-22.5, but the cost for us is different than the cost to a bus company.

Well I have someone's cousins son here putting the tire on. 

I have never seen a tire put on the bead by filling it with starter spray and lighting it.  But the tire seated and is being mounted now.

Yup that's how it's done the old school way  just make sure you don't put to much either in there

Agree on the 11R 22.5, and of course the ether to seat the bead, but have you seen a guy throw a 22.5 alum rim into the tire, did both sides in one swing, like magic, would have not thought it possible until I watched a young gent in Madison Wi, do it at a truck stop. Lots to be learned around some shops.

Be aware that the HD truck tire industry is rapidly changing to metric sizing, like we've had on our cars for a dozen years or more.  So it's a little more involved than just walking into a store and sayin' "Put tires on my bus."

One thing to take into consideration is "tire revs per mile."  The stock size for your MCI was 12.00R22.5, and that's what MCI designed the powertrain around.  Thus to keep stock performance, you want to run tires that approximate the same RPM as the OEM tire.  This will mean a little homework on your part, to find the average revs per mile for 12R22.5s among the various manufacturers.  That will then become your baseline to work off of.

More RPM = lower top speed and greater fuel consumption.

Lower RPM has the opposite effect.

Then start comparing the "old" sizing nomenclature with the new metric sizing to find something equivalent or suitable.   Once you've decided, then start shopping price.

What tires the bus came with and what tires you should use is determined by weighing the bus by axle. I think you'll find that you'll be able to use the same 11R-22.5's all around. But-once again-weighing is the way to find out. Good luck, TomC

I put 11R24.5 tires and wheels on to keep up the ground clearance. and keep the revs down. Jerry
