Pick the route with the fewest mountains and nicest weather. Some western mts already are getting snow!

I-40 is probably the best bet, it goes almost all the way. Take US-58 from Barstow to Bakersfield, Tehachapi Pass isn't bad at all. Then US-99 all the way to Marysville. 99 is more relaxed and scenic than I-5 and probably shorter.

I've used them all and live in North Ark. I only use 70, 80 and 90 when going to the NW because they both have some serious grades, passes and elevations.

Jeff -

I concur with Gus: I-40 to Barstow, CA, then 58 to Bakersfield and 99 to Marysville/Yuba City.

Depending on where in "Central Missouri" you're located (Brookfield? Columbia? Camdenton? Cabool?) will have some effect on how you choose to get to I-40.  I-44 that runs from St Louis > OKC thru Springfield and Tulsa should be a good connection.

You mentioned Beale AFB.  Beale is E of M/YC, so if that's your destination, you should take Hiway 70 when it splits off 99 N of Sacramento.  Otherwise you'll be stopping every other block as you try to work your way from 99 across M/YC.  BTDT!

(Trivia: Yuba City is on the W side of the Feather River, Marysville is on the E.)

And if your schedule permits, take a break in Fresno while NB on 99 and we can swap bus stories over a Pepsi.  My contact info's in my profile, click on my name to the left.

Jeff -

I see that there's a "Fam Camp" right on the base, looks like it's got 44 spaces.  Might check that out.

There are also some campgrounds off of Hiway 20, to the N of the base.  Try AAA or Woodall's campground directories to see what you can find.

Jeff might want to check with your company or Base commander up there. Our local news( we live 40 minutes south west from Beal AFB) said it was shut down and they are fur-lowing 550 people but the number changes daily.

Ed Hackenbruch :  I do know Dick  he owned a resort on the lake of the ozarks years ago. He kept his MCI  parked on Hwy 42 at Perry Grams house at kaiser missouri its was painted shades of blue with  sail boat pictures  on the window covers and chrome valve covers on his engine . It's a nice looking bus.

Actually it is a sailboat mural on the one side and 2 snow skiers on the other,......and he must have taken the chrome valve covers off before he traded it to a dealer in Texas and we ended up getting it in an ebay auction. We do need a new paint job, after almost 30 years in the weather it is starting to peel. We got to meet Dick the first year that we had the bus when we accidentally ended up in Missouri with some time to kill. Also talked to him on the phone a couple of times during the first few years.

You will be fine once you get to Arizona, plenty of In and Out burger stops along the way. Once in CA, 99 up the middle of the state is better than 1-5.  Road is a bit rough right now.  Best fuel prices are right in and around Bakersfield. The more North you go the more it cost!  Stay away from the LA basin at all times! Traffic is never good there unless you travel very early Sunday mornings.

Make sure you have all your permits and fees paid up. Non-California resident fee, bus conversion entry fee, opportunity to travel on pavement service fee, Should have stopped at Yosemite tax,......... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Welcome to Nor Cal.

They have a campground at Beale on the base are you x military or have a family member that is ?  I am off I 40 at Needles on AZ 95 if you need fuel exit at Needles and drive to Ft Mohave to Maverick or Smith's it will save you a $1.00 a gal from the CA prices

If you fill at the Pilot or Loves at the Lake Havasu exit in AZ off I 40 use the RV pump saves 8 cents a gal off the posted price both Loves and Pilot have a dump and water there

CA has a inspection station on I 40 when you leave AZ so don't have any plants or fresh fruits or veggies it ok to ship the stuff from CA just don't try and bring it back  ::)
