In my seemingly never ending quest for a new towed, I've settled on a 2001 Tahoe.  Now, anyone towing these?  Is there any catch to just putting the transfer case in neutral by simply pressing the 4wd buttons?  Any cautions?  thanks.....glenn hanson, MC9

Hi Glen,

It's that simple....  Hold the 2 buttons until it switches into nutral.

I have the 2003 GMC Yukon, it seems to tow very well too.  You also can take the key out of the ignition and the collum

doesn't lock. Pretty cool.

I also upgraded to this roadmaster tow bar.

I towed a 99 Tahoe for several thousand miles and loved it. As long as it has the electronic transfer case, then it is easy to shift into neutral.

Being able to remove the key in the one position without locking the steering column is also a great feature. I always drove with the key removed and the doors locked so there was no way someone could get in the car while I was parked at a rest area, or overnight. I did discover that I could not use the electronic door lock as vibrations during towing would sometimes set it off. LOL

As I recall, there was one fuse that needed to be removed to prevent battery discharge, but I do not recall for sure.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a good Reisling in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming:  WOO HOO, what a ride

Here is a procedure I prepared several years ago that you might want to copy and keep in a convenient place.
Be warned that GM redesigned the Tahoe in 2000 so procedures for a 1999 Tahoe may not apply. Brian
1999 Tahoe 4 X4
Shifting Transfer Case with automatic transmission and Electronic transfer case

Shifting to Neutral
The vehicle should be attached to the tow vehicle before shifting to neutral
1.   Set the Parking Brake
2.    Start the vehicle
3.   Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N)
4.   Shift the transfer case to 2HI (if necessary)
5.   Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to neutral is complete.
6.   Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second.
7.   Shift the transmission to AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE (D) for one second.
8.   Turn the ignition switch to OFF (Accessory, not lock)
9.   Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P)
10.   Release Parking brake
11.   Make sure steering wheel is not locked.

Shifting out of Neutral
1.   Set the parking brake
2.   Apply the foot brake
3.   Start the vehicle with the transmission in PARK (P)
4.   Press the 2HI button
5.   Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL (N)
6.   When the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL the NEUTRAL light will go out and the 2HI light will come on.

Thanks, gentlemen, for the replies.  I think that's the way I'm going to go.  I've got to get rid of m K5 Blazer before the rust over takes it.  It still looks good, but it's days are numbered.....g
