Not much else to add? Found a deal on 8v71 and a four speed. The tranny is supposedly in good shape, but the 8v71 would have to be rebuilt (came out of an old truck).

That would give us an opportunity to get rid of all of the electronics on our current S60 and b500 tranny. At that point we might look into running unfiltered straight veggie oil in in and used motor oil. Could save us a bundle on fuel.

Anything else we should consider?

Oh yes, I would consider putting Google Nose on it eventually http://www.google.com/landing/nose/ Might be pretty cool.

Are the 8v71's and 8v92's much difference in size and weight?  If you gonna take that 60 out go with the gusto!

Wing to help traction! With all that extra power and low gear it would be a wheel spinner. Bob

Actually, may not need to be rebuilt. Looks pretty good.

Just "minor finish issues" -- that'll buff out!

I have a set of slicks for that puppy when you make the change. You'll need um when you drop the proverbial Hammer!

Good points and thoughts all around. Bob, I like the wing idea. Probably be needed. Muld, let me know when I can come pickup your slicks, will need those for sure.

Thinking of painting it before install.....thinking silver.

Put a good paint job on it and it should run just fine. Obviously this is from a GMC Astro since it has a GM air conditioning compressor on it and the low profile turbocharger. 8V-92 and 8V-71 are the same block and head external size. The only difference is the 8V-92 has a large vibration dampner on the front of the crankshaft (like a small flywheel) that keeps it from easily being installed in a V drive.

Yes changing to the 8V-71 will be one way of having a mechanical engine. It will also be a way to loose 2 or more mpg and about half the torque. If you change it out, let us know-we'll take you directly to the looney farm-and this from a person that has his birthday today. Good Luck, TomC

John,

Why not come down to Florida and we can exchange our engine and trannies?

I know a lot of nay sayer's say you can't put a straight engine in a V-drive like my 4905, but I think I have it figured out for both of us

Since I am only 96" wide, I can modify the tranny service door to let it hang out a few feet.

Only folks who might complain are bicycle riders in the share lane, but I doubt they will make it to a phone... :P

Happy Birthday Tom.

I think it's a great idea and that you should go for it.  But do it today, cause tomorrow it will be a stupid idea.

That small ac compressor also means it might have come out of a GMC pickup. I think GEO Metros also used that combo with a larger turbo.
