Skylights

Do any of you have skylights in the top of your bus?  It seems there are often many of the windows blanked out during the conversion.  So I was wondering if you put skylights in to replace the lost light?

I haven't done that but, I don't see why you can't.

How about where the escape hatches are. Maybe get a sky light made to fit the hatch area...

I left my escape hatch in place and plan to use it as a sky light and source of fresh air. I am making a screen that clips in when open to keep out bugs.

I kept the two excape hatches in our Eagle 10. I made them into skylights and they work great. I took some of the glass from the side windows we replaced and cut the tinted glass to fit the skylight opening.  I removed all of the hardware and covered the opening with the glass. One is in the bathroom and the other in the living room. It has worked great for ten years. No leaks and plenty of light.

Wow! I was just thinking about this myself the other night and was wondering why one doesn't see more of them. I love light and would like to have some in my bus. The only drawbacks I could think of were problems with heat loss or heat gain, depending on the weather, and possible leaks. Anyone else have any experience with them?

Right now I have no windows in my bedroom so when the doors to bath and bedroom are closed it is pitch black in there, which I love for sleeping, also keeps it cool in summer. The way I'm doing mine keeps the existing hatch in place and therefore don't have to worry about creating leaks. It also gives me the option if I want light in the room or not, how I want to get fresh air circulating, and gives me a lot of privacy with light if that's what I want.

Unfortunately my GM doesn't have escape hatches.

Bill Glenn -- Aka HomeGrownDiesel has a nifty (I think boat hatch) on the roof of his Eagle.
It offers light AND access to the roof.
Looks great -- ask him!!

I have two of the original astro lights in my roof and they are great for light.

I also added a marine front boat hatch in the bedroom to use as an escape hatch and it is semi transparent and lets some filtered light in.

Since I did a roof raise, I boxed the openings in and will tint the glass (you will bake under one in the Summer) and add a day/night shade across the boxed opening when done.

But I do love them and they do second duty as night lights when parked.

Mine has 4 factory skylights. Great way to let water in/ add to the list of stuff to fix . 
Also adds to the greenhouse effect.

Greyhound ended up painting them with a solid white paint that blocked all light. Over time, the gasket shrinks & the water enters. . .

I have seen Bill's (homegrowndiesel) roof hatch/ skylight. Now, thats the way to do it! I'd like to do that to mine. 

If you're going to add one, the aftermarket sun roof that I've also seen added looks like a good way (at minimal expense) to have a vent AND light (& avoid the leaks mine has.)

The Scenicruisers all came factory with four skylight/escape hatches. Even if you don't have side windows skinned, it's still nice.

'course the scoundrels that converted mine *carpeted* the ceiling right over them. Not looking forward to the work that removing the carpet/glue will take.
