I recently picked up my 1969 GMC Bus in Portland. It was professionally converted in 1988 and Farmers has an existing policy on it with the previous owner (11 years, no claims), but refuses to issue a new policy because the conversion was not done by a 'reputable' conversion company. I just need liability. Anyone have a favorite agent for these older buses?

Many thanks!

I just got insurance for ours, used National Interstate, they specialize in buses and bus conversions, they wanted $180 a year for liability only.

Progressive turned us down, has to be a pro conversion.

We ended up with Allstate, and had no problems getting liability for ours. We had State Farm for years, then got a notice from them. "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there"...........NOT!

I use Statefarm, the rates were good.

Not nice people.  Particularily the fire insurance industry...but that is another story.  Try Progressive Insurance Company.  Awhile back they had no problems with a do-it-your-self conversion bus.  They binded mine.  Expensive, but doable maybe perhaps.  HB of CJ (old coot)

Thanks - that gives me some alternatives :)

Paul,

"You're in good hands with Allstate " too.......NOT!      I'll bet all insurance companies have had dissatisfied customers after having to file a claim on a loss.

We have Progressive on our home done conversion, but had to provide pictures and we didn't put an inflated value on our bus. I think some people still have the illusion that their bus is worth what they have invested in it. It isn't, and thats why insurance companies won't accept some buses. IMO

Good luck, Sam

I used my progressive agent for the bus.
Liability for about $150-200 a year all they needed was a copy of the title.
I've had it for about 8 years now.

Neither Allstate nor Farmer's is any good, you're luck they turned you down.

Progressive is good.

Good Sam is probably good, first hand I know their Road Emergency Service is excellent.

Always say you have a motorhome, don't use the word bus unless forced!!

I was researching the same thing yesterday as I just bought a 1962 PD4106 converted in 1997. I did get questions about if it was converted professionally or by an individual. I said by an individual as that's what I was told but actually haven't seen it yet. Have only seen pics but it looked well done. The agent at CMACinsurance.com was friendly and needed to ask someone else. He came back on and said they would insure it for liability only. I told him that was all I was looking for. He said many companies were not insuring conversions anymore and thought they were being over-cautious. He said his company was one of the few left that do. I called 1-800-847-2886. I notice their website number is 1-800-462-2123.

Progressive/Poli-Seek, ( they took over AON I think) my insurer since I have owned my coach actually called and asked me if my bus was still worth as much as I had originally insured it for....
We finally agreed that it must have depreciated about 35% maybe a little more.....I still have Collision and Comp. etc.
He lopped about 500$ off what I was paying.so i can see where some people still think these old girls are appreciating...but insurance companies see it different.
