Don't bother testing the thermostat.  They are cheap enough.  If going through the effort of getting to them, just replace them.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

Just ordered a set of 170 degrees therm.,gaskets . My 6v92ta runs and shifts better at lower temp. is this to low ?             dave

No because you will be at around 180 degrees when they open completely they just start to open at the 170 degrees
