This was so awesome. It turned right over the ranch we live at in Roseville CA. It was at 1500 feet and was heading to Los Angeles for its final resting place.

Well we knew it was coming up over the Capital Sacramento, which we live just north east of by 8 minutes from in farmland area. The news was on and they said it had just left Edwards AFB at 8:30 Am and was on its way before it went back to Los Angeles to be put in storage hanger for awhile until they finish the building that will house it in the museum. BTW they are cutting down 400 tree in LA to get it to its destination and then re-planting new ones?

But anyway we stood out in the back with cameras in hand, the wife and I and some neighbors and we all said "oh it probably won't come out here, but maybe if it has to turn". Well we didn't know it would slow down and turn right over our place and at 1500 ft it looked like it was close enough to touch. Here's one a friend sent me from the bay area and yep thats the golden gate, sorry it was so fuzzy.

Apparently it was decided to not temporarily remove the wings to avoid damaging the heat tiles . . .

Yep John that was exactly why. A friend of mine help design the tiles many years ago at Hughes Corp and i have seen them up close. If you try to remove them now it would show no matter what you did to them to try and cover it up. Because of the super adhesive they now use to hold them on they would be damaged beyond repair and could only make new ones to fix it and it would look bad. You would think that someone at Sony pictures could recreat the look eh. or 400 old trees?

Sad part is it probably cost $200K just to do the environmental impact study to cut down 200 trees!   ???

Steve you are so right and they are going to plant not 1 but 2 trees for every 1 they cut down at tax payers expense, not to say what all the rotting roots under the side walks will do over the years with all the small earthquakes they have down there. Then there will be the after protests and more law suits etc. Oh what fun we have in Cali eh!...

Dave - Great picture; end of an era.  That would make a heckuva(n) RV conversion.  I can just see the posts on shuttlenuts.com -

"Found used NASA shuttle on craigslist - thoughts?"
"Ready to launching from campsite - looking for oxygen fuel supplier anywhere near Sheboygan..."
"Anyone with 747 available for tow on I-10 in MS?"
"Selling our shuttle - thoughts?"

A shameless plug for my business - visit www.magazineexchange.co.uk for back issue magazines - thousands of titles covering cars, motorbikes, aircraft, railways, boats, modelling etc. You'll find lots of interest, although not much covering American buses sadly.

I live in L.A. and many are up in arms about having to cut down nearly 400 trees to facilitate the move from the airport to the museum.  The Shuttle committee came back and said they would plant 3 trees for every cut down.  It doesn't take a lot of years to get a tree up to size, it the right tree is used.

Classic example-if you had gone up to Lake Tahoe in the 1930's, you would have seen a clear cut mountain-meaning no trees.  All the trees that are there now have been planted since the 1930's, and many are quite large.  Good Luck, TomC

P.S: amazing what can be done with modifying an old DC3.

The tree fiasco is another example of why this shuttle should have gone to Seattle's Museum of Flight (Boeing) instead of L.A.  The museum is right on Boeing Field.  L.A. could have got the simulator that Seattle is getting.  Let the flame begin.
