I had a series 60 in the hockey team's bus. Yes it kind of vibrates at idle but I wouldn't call it a rattle. And for sure it sounds awful at any rpm compared to a 2 stroke. But the power! The flat torque curve from 1200 to 1800rpm is awsome. Go up any mountain pass with the cars.

Looks like a S60 from the back. You could tell people it is, most wouldn't know the difference, LOL.

How was fabbing the intake and exhaust plumbing?

Exhaust was easy intake took a bit of work. I used the charge air cooler that came with the donor bus.

Once you learn how to drive the engine/transmission you should see 9+MPG. Charge air cooler on the drivers side? If you have a clean radiator you won't overheat. Highest I saw was about 192F climbing Monarch pass in Colorado in 75-80F outside temp at 22MPH.

Enjoy,

If you want smooth shifting with the HT740, mine has the RV shifting sequence.  Goes 1st converter, 2nd converter, 2nd lockup, then when shifting to third goes back to converter during the shift and then back to lockup-it eliminates the hard shift feel.  It is only in converter for about 3 seconds.  Does this for 4th gear.  On down shift goes into converter then into lockup.  Good Luck, TomC

Looks like a great install.
I have done 3 of the series 50 conversions and it isn't a easy job, but well worth the effort.
In my Eagle it started it's life with a 8v71, then to a 8v92 set at 475 hp.  When I sold the Eagle it had a series 50 with the 740 transmission and a 3.36 rear.  That was the best set up for power and good fuel economy I had with the coach.  The world transmission would have been lots better.  I put a 4060 in my son's coach with a 410 rear.  My series 50 was turned up to 375 hp my son's is set at 350hp.  There are lots of people here on the net that talk bad about the series 50 and 60 but I sure wish my MCI had one and not the 8v92.  After driving the Eagle about 22,000 miles with the series 50 my MCI with the 8v92 is a dog.  If the 8v92 has any problems it will be replaced with a 50 or 60.
I was wondering what hp you had your series 50 was set at.

Yep and some have removed the 50 series from Eagles because they thought the 50 series was a dog Jack lol I had one setting in my shop for 6 months till sold it was replaced by a C-13 Cat he loves

My actual ECM set up is for  320 hp. But I advanced the timing 1 degree on the cam gear and had Detroit Diesel BC rework the injectors and they are caliberated to cal code 10.

We experimented with a few engines on the dyno and found that injector cal code 10 gave us another 30 hp.  the torque was marginally better at 1200lb.ft.  Cal code 50 works almost the same.

I ran for a while at 320 until I could find someone to turn it up to the 375.  Man did it make a lot of difference.  I haven't heard about changing the timing, didn't think you could on the series 50.

I am not a big fan of the 6V92 or the S50 but if you would have done that to the 92 you would be seeing the same results. The only difference is the heat out put of the two-stroke from the four-stroke. With those mods in the 6V92 including the air to air and the new trans you would see around 9.2-9.5 mpg with 1100 to 1200 ftlbs tq.

Having said this I am Glad you are happy with what you have done.

People just don't know what air to air will do for a 2 stroke do they Don lol the first engine that ever had air to air and the water cooling at the top of the piston something the new DD brag about fwiw

The price Gerry paid for the donor bus was hard to beat if it wasn't so far I would have bought one just for the transmission

Pardon my ignorance but what is air to air?

intercooler for the turbo. Basically a big radiator plumbed in to the air intake system between the turbo and the engine. The compressed air from the turbo runs through the big "radiator" to cool it before entering the engine. Serves 2 purposes...not only cooler air into the engine resulting in cooler running, but also cooler air is more dense than hot air so you essentially get more volume into the engine. You need 2 things to produce more power in a diesel...more air and more fuel.
Some are called, some are sent, some just got up and went.

I am totally happy with the technology of my '82 6V92TA; and air to air, or anything else someone comes up with to gain one mpg at thousands of dollars cost is B.S.

Sorry folks, I speak my mind and I am not interested in supporting anyone.

If we all thought a like Geoff DD would not have offered 4 different ways to cool the air

I like the the air to air myself I have always thought the after cooler setup was not that great in any engine DD,Cat or Cummins JMO it beats nothing
