When I work on an excavator or cat, I use at least 6x6 size blocks, and i have some larger that that. I also put as many as i can under what i have to work on, with room to get under there of course, and i normally have the jacks under there as a safety as well. some of the blocks can be kept spiked together if you do this often.  I also normally get another backhoe or something and bump the thing i am working on a bit to see how stable it is.. And, i often wait until the next day to see if the thing has sunk into the ground on one side.  (work on clay ground around here).

Then when i am working underneith the thing, i always watch out for any movement...

I am old, but still alive...

You guys are all babies.  You don't need no stupid jack stands.

Not only that, Len, it looks like he is welding on the gas tank!

Come on, stop being over critical of the guy.  9 out of 10 times, nothing will go wrong.

Well, let's hope that's only the ninth time he's done that, not the tenth!

I try to be extra cautious when doing things like that.  I stop at number eight.

At least he has a rock under the rear tire.

That guy is probably a boatbuilder - using lengths of wood as props is the standard way yachts are laid-up all round the world. During the winter you see boatyards full of hundreds of boats propped up just like that. It never seems satisfactory to me, but they don't often fall over.

A shameless plug for my business - visit www.magazineexchange.co.uk for back issue magazines - thousands of titles covering cars, motorbikes, aircraft, railways, boats, modelling etc. You'll find lots of interest, although not much covering American buses sadly.
