Couch that turns into a bunk bed

I have no idea where to buy this. All I have is this photograph, which I discovered today on the front page of Reddit.com. This is a couch that turns into a bunk bed. Might be suitable for a bus conversion. Thought I should share this.

When I first read the title of this thread, I was expecting to see the couch/bunk setup that the classic GMC Motorhomes used (which the top bunk essentially hangs from the ceiling - http://www.flickr.com/photos/sierra16/4272831604/#)

I can see these being $5,000. But maybe a home built version can be designed.

My first motorhome had a couch/bunk homemade setup.  There was a hinged panel against the wall that served as the couch back when down.  It may have been 3/4 plywood.  The pillows went in front of it.  To convert it to a bunk, you lifted the panel to be horizontal and placed some removable legs in the front corners that went from the panel to insertion points in the edge of the couch base that were otherwise covered with the cushions.  The kids were young then, so there was enough room for them.

That would be easy to build!  neat idea, you'd just have to work out the dimensions and hinge locations.

I also vote for building one yourself. There's nothing remotely clever about the mechanism, just a couple of hinges and gas struts.


By co-incidence, just this week I looked into the idea of building a sofabed for my bus, but having seen the mechanism inside of the type of bed I wanted, I decided that this was one thing I would buy rather than build myself - this is what they have inside:

Lastly, I can't quickly find a photo now, but some long-distance buses also had a system where two forward-facing seats (one in front of the other) would convert into a bunk bed. That type has been discussed on here before.

Awesome ideas, for sure. But I can certainly dream up MANY uses for $6,800 (plus shipping, I am sure!) in my bus, including buying 1,700 gallons of diesel fuel.

It probably doesn't apply in this case of a folding bunk bed but one idea I always apply in bus beds is that there is no need for the box spring base normally found in home bed sets.

I use a simple plywood base and any height you want and make a nice foam mattress of whatever thickness or firmness you want. Those commercial mattress foundations are just overpriced junk anyway.

My 4104 has a nice walnut folding bunk bed set that makes into a sort of couch. Not elegant but it works. Only problem is a couple of bolts have to be removed to convert. Since we never used the couch part it doesn't matter to us. It is , however, a nice piece of custom carpentry by someone.
