My exhaust pipe, if anyone cares... :)

I built a 4.6" turbo flange out of some 5" tube and a 5" vee band clamp ring.  I shortened the clamp ring and reformed it to the smaller diameter and welded it to the tube.  The tube I just cut around an inch out of it's middle and rewelded it to the smaller diameter.  Worked a treat.  The tube fits about an inch inside the turbo outlet, and is clamped around with a special "Detroit Diesel 8V71T vee band clamp".   The first part of the down-tube is a 5" 90 degree close radius bend that I cut and formed to taper to 4.6" to weld to the flange, and then cut to around 80 degrees to point at the bottom 90 bend.  The middle bit is just straightforward flex hose with wrap-around clamps.  The muffler is the stock MCI muffler, which is probably not the best choice but it's what I have and with, no kidding, a $grand$ sunk into my total exhaust manifold and pipe, I don't feel like buying a new muffler.  If it's too restrictive it's just going to have to live with it for a while!  

It is within a 1/4" of touching the corner of the remote switch box, and the hot housing of the turbo sits an inch below the skinner valve mounts, so I will probably wrap them to keep the heat away.  But it all fit and I didn't have to put dents in anything, which makes me happy...  and the girls say guys can't estimate size...     Notice how the coolant down-tube from the left hand radiator comes over just above the manifold up to the turbo, and just behind the exhaust pipe.  I am particularly proud of that bit of plumbing because I didn't have to change the stock MCI water pipes, and because I totally forgot about that pipe when I put the turbo there.  Which is probably a good thing because if I had remembered about that coolant pipe I probably would have tried to miss it and totally hit it instead...   

Tomorrow is hook up the skinner valves, the blower belt air cylinder and control, and put the air cleaner in.  The friggin' air cleaner is HUGE.

        I used my stock muffler I cut in a second 4" outlet. the new outlet Misses one baffle in the muffler sounds great but not to loud. seems to have helped performance. Still needs more air (no turbo)

  That outlet from the Turbo looks like its right up against the rear start control box?? Isnt there going to be a great deal of heat coming off that pipe?

hi Art.  yes, it's close to both the remote control box and the hot housing of the turbo is close to the skinner valves.  The exhaust isn't all that hot, probably no more than 800 degrees most of the time there, and a wrap with that fiberglass cloth or some other heat dampening material will probably take care of it.  I could also build a heat shield.  If I find I need to I can move both.  Playing with race cars you learn about controlling heat and one thing is there is an awful lot of air there, it's right under where the air from the radiator blowers dump.  I don't think there will be a problem, but I can fix it if there is.

It's funny, I run headers on race cars that glow bright red on full throttle almost that close to fiberglass, and they don't even bubble the paint.  Heat and exhausts is a funny thing  sometimes.

My pyrometer thermocouple is right after the turbo (6V92TA). The most I have ever seen is about 500F.

thanks for that number, I really appreciate it.  My race car headers are around 1250 degrees F or so for the first 6" but it is amazing how fast they cool down along the system.

If it were mine I'd wrap the whole turbo/exhaust with EHP!

O never was found of the wraps or blankets. But we had a bus that had an engine fire before we'd bought it and the previous owner was quite deceiving about were the fire was and the damage it did. Anyway the entire engine compartment insulation was burned out.

Clifford sent me some EHP to try. and the link to get in touch with them. It made a huge difference!

Our new Setra's have the custom fitted blankets or covers and they are awsome too!
