Final steps, so many and they take so long...  got all the plumbing above the gearbox sorted, fixed the clutch linkage, installed all the engine cradle u-bolts (which involves a long cleaning and painting process, so it took forever), did up the wiring to the starter motor, filled it with oil (with the industrial pan required to clear the oil pump drive gear it takes around 10 gallons of oil), knocked myself out once getting out from under and sat up an inch too soon, hooked up the oil drain lines from the alternator and the turbo, and wala - pushed the rear start switch and she cranked!  Cranked very fast too, very easy to turn over.  Probably the low compression turbo pistons.  30 seconds of cranking and I had oil out of the turbo line, which I had left off.  Put it on, another 10 seconds of cranking and I had 30 PSI on the gauge on the oil pressure manifold!  To say I was happy and relieved is an understatement.  After 8 months, hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars it's slowly starting to come to life...

Question - can I fire it with the turbo not connected, just the two manifolds blowing straight back?  Just to see if it runs?

Yup, but I wouldn't do it for long. Manifolds will blow choking smoke, not because of the lack of turbo, but because of the work done.

It also won't burn very clean until it gets up to operating temp.

Plan is to fire it tomorrow to set the idle only, since once I get the water pipes and exhaust in place I won't be able to reach  the control tube with the vice grip that is the fail-safe...  Then button it up and put water in it so I can run it for a few minutes, hook up the turbo, fabricate the exhaust down tube, etc...  It's close, but on a new install there are always more things to do...  My air cleaner came in to the store yesterday, so I can pick it up and start to build that too...
