Coolant filter with additives for 8V71?

I just bought the latest Donaldson coolant filter with their additive package, wanted to double check it was OK for use in the MCI 8V71.

All depends on what antifreeze you use on what package to use with all the new designer type antifreeze you have to be careful

It's the one for the type of antifreeze I am using, not the extra long life antifreeze.  It's not a cheap filter though.

There were discussions here a long time ago about additives. I was left with the understanding that the dry sleeve 8v71 did not need them, only wet sleeve like the v92s.

  Can we run any kind of antifreeze in 71's, ethelyn glycol stuff like Prestone, or do we gotta run something special?

I run standard Prestone anti freeze in both my wet sleeve Caterpillar 3406B and my dry cylinder liner Detroit 8V-71.  The key is to test with test strips to see the acidity of the coolant.  If it is off, add Nacool to counteract it.  Typically, 71 series really don't need a coolant filter-although it can't hurt.  Good Luck, TomC

You need to watch the new Prestone in a DD buy the heavy duty green stuff if you can find it,I always bought the Alliance the house brand from Freightliner,
I have 71 series here that the block has pin holes in one cylinder wall from cavitation so use what you want just passing it on not a contest with me

  So Brian, what are you running for coolant and what kind of filter??

  In Minnesota I always used at least a 50/50 mix, and more often 60/40, ive witnessed -40 and colder a few times.  Down here its rare to see sub zero temps, trying to figure out if I really need -34 protection, if I ever go north it wont be in winter. My understanding is anything over 20% mix turns to slush and wont bust anything?

It has been my understanding that water carries away heat better than glycol.  So, straight glycol would cool less efficiently.  50/50 is, I think, the opt blend.  In Souther Commiefornia we ran 75/25 if we had any sort of cooling problem and many did have.  We never saw the 120 degree Phoenix temps but 105 was common.

I think that concentrations above 50/50 have a bad affect on the cooling system innards and components.  I ran 100% for a few years till a friend and a rad shop wised me up.  Hard to believe that EVER happened, I am sure, and it is true that it might be an urban myth.

That filter does seem expensive at $44 to $67 online.  I don't use a coolant filter with supplemental SCAs.  I decided I would rather monitor the SCAs and add as needed rather than just add SCAs continuously.

My new Zyrex coolant doesn't require SCAs so I am once again using a filter without SCAs.
