Tall rigs at Myrtle Beach State Park?

As some of you may already know,, we are en route to Myrtle Beach to pick up a new set of batteries from the distributor there.  They are just down the street from Camping World, and we are hoping to snag one of the few hookups there the night before the batteries come in.

We'd then like to spend some time in Myrtle beach.  There is a lovely state park there, with a campground which can accommodate rigs up to 40' long.  However, the first time we drove by, the dense canopy of trees on the entrance road deterred us.  We drive right through low-hanging branches if they are small, pliable ones, say half an inch or so.  But these looked to be sturdy hardwood branches, and they looked a lot lower than our 13'0" clearance.  Our blog entry, oh so long ago, is here:

So here's my question: has anyone with a 13' rig been into this park before?  Does anyone know for sure if we can make it down the road?

Sometime since that fateful first loop of the U.S., back when we were bus newbies and my driving skills were still being honed, I built myself a 13' measuring stick made of three sections of PVC pipe.  So my backup plan is to ride over there on the scooter and actually measure, but that's got logistical challenges of its own.

If we can't get into Myrtle Beach State Park, we'll head south to Huntington State Park near Murrell's Inlet, where we've stayed several times before.  But I'm really hoping to stay right in Myrtle Beach on this trip.

Sean, Where are you at? I live in Murrells Inlet about 4 miles from Huntington State Park. Not sure of the tree height in Myrtle Beach state

Park, I know there are some low ones and most are Live Oak trees, they don't give for anything.I do know that Huntington is really crowded

was there a few days ago( to walk the beach).Not a whole lot of big spots there.

I can probably get you close enough to my power that the eagle is hooked to. 50 amp/ water park in the drive.

I'm with Ed on that one...there were lots of low hanging limbs the last time I was in there. I'd be afraid to take a 13ft high bus down that entrance road.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies.

This is, of course, the busy season there, and the parks are so booked solid that we made a reservation, uncharacteristic for us, lest we get aced out entirely.  I did talk to someone at the park who claimed they'd never even heard anyone ask of a height problem (really?) and that they get tractor-trailer rigs in the park for deliveries all the time with no trouble.  I can dump the air and drop my height to 12'8" or thereabouts, too, which might help.  So we shall see how it goes, although I might still ride out there ahead of time with my measuring stick.

Our batteries should be ready on Wednesday, so we took Wednesday and Thursday nights at the park.  Nothing available beyond that -- no surprise on a weekend.  We'll roll into town tomorrow night, and stay at Camping World, which is just a couple blocks from the battery place.  With luck they will have a hookup available, but I am not counting on it, so we may be in for a night of the generator popping on and off.

Ed, thanks for the offer.  FWIW, we can fit into most sites at Huntington, and we happen to like that park.  It's also pretty open so we have no trouble getting on line with our Internet satellite dish.  But they're sold out for the next week, so it's not an option anyway.  In any case, we really wanted to stay a bit closer to Myrtle Beach this time instead of Murrell's Inlet.  Remember, our only transportation is a pair of scooters, and the ride back to MB from MI is a long one even in pleasant weather; we'd rather not do it in this heat.  If we really get stuck, though, I'll give you a shout.

I suspect we'll head south along the coast on Friday, looking for someplace a bit less crowded.

Check out Ocean Lakes campground a few miles north of the state park. They are set up for the biggest rigs( most are pull thrus ) and I do not think they ever run out of room. They are not as cheap but are my choice if I do not have the motorcycle with me. They have a strict rule and do not allow them past the front parking lot because of the noise. The KOA is the place if you have a bike with you but they are not on the beach if that is important. Pirate Land is ok to but they do not have a lot of pull thrus.

I stayed at the KOA once, it was kind of cool to be in a totally forested pine woods, right in the middle of town.  I really liked it, and it had cable TV, possibly due to the woods making satellite all but impossible.

It has been a while, but we had no problem with out 12.5 Eagle.  I don't think you will have any trouble getting into the park

Just a quick update here, for anyone who cares:  We are safely at Myrtle Beach State Park and we had no trouble whatsoever getting in.  I attributed our previous "trouble" to our own inexperience at the time; updated blog post is here:

It's a bit crowded at this time of year, but still a lovely park.  I'm sorry that they were sold out for this weekend, because we'd love to stay a few more days.
