1960 4104 governer problem

My bus started to not idle today.  You have to push the accelerator down 1/2 way to get it to engage.  I traced the linkage back and the throttle assembly is fine so must be the governer if I am ever spelling it right!    Anyone tell me how to troubleshot and and tips on fixing?

I'd consider pulling the air line on the shut down solinoid you might have a slow bit of air building up on the shut down solinoid

Or just pull the valve cover and start it up and see what is messing with ya

I mainly mess with motorcycles........... when I have trouble similar to you,  I make sure air can get in ,  get out and I have uninteruped fuel supply.

Assuming that you don't have an air throttle, disconnect the fuel pedal linkage to the Governor lever (with help) and have someone start the bus. YOU now have control of the engine. You might have some lost motion between the linkage and the governor lever. Make sure the bolt securing the governor lever to the governor is tight..they wear if not tight.

You GM Engine manual should lead you in the right direction if you understand that you have a Limiting Speed Governor not a Variable Speed Governor.

A still of the engine showing R side of engine As viewed from the back and left side where the governor is would help everyone here know what set up you have....the vid is not clear enough.  Also crack out you manual and start reading the governor part.

His fuel shut off is on the flywheel end of the head on the blower side, behind the orange filter. There is no solenoid on the governor. Pretty much the standard setup on the later 4104's.

I want to see a still photo of the governor and the "Electronic Device" on the end of the governor. could it be a Jake buffer screw and switch?

Dallas had it a buffer switch for looks like he has the spacer under the valve cover for Jakes also

So I guess I have to check the screw settings and if that does not work open it up.  I think I will call someone to do that!

It is your engine but that little gadget can cost you a engine in a hurry if you don't know what you are doing

Let me restate that for clarity. DON'T F*** WITH THE GOVERNOR IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING

And, if you do, please be sure to video tape it. A runaway 6-71 would be a YouTube sensation.

You have a way with words Len LOL I try and help with other parts on the engine but when they ask how to adjust the governor they are on their own no way will I help owners blow a engine and it has happen before

C'mon guys, there's a riser in the valve cover and that Jake solenoid in the buffer screw thread. This engine is equiped with a Jake brake but it may not be extended to the drivers' station..or is malfunctioning.

Does anyone need a seeing eye dog?
