Lack of a thermostat can cause overheating but, I don't think it is from water moving too fast.
The water pump develops a pressure differential. When you reduce the outlet pressure, you reduce the inlet pressure.
If the inlet pressure is reduced below the vapor point, the coolant will 'boil' & cavitate which will put gas vapor into the system. We all know gas vapor doesn't conduct heat as well as a liquid.

Replacing the thermostat with an orifice (washer) may work as it has for some others - didn't work too well for me when I tried it on a car in years past tho . . .

Good luck with your trip, maybe you could drive at night & not need AC. Traffic would be less too which makes for a much more relaxing drive for me.  ;D

Enjoy your time with Gene!  8)

Dave,
I'm sure Gene is gong to use the same set up on your coach that he has on his. It's a chassis mount Ross / TRW gear and not an axle mount Sheppard. Although there are exceptions it should end up driving better than a Sheppard gear because the Ross / TRW gears have a free play adjustment where the Sheppard doesn't and you will have many less components between the gear and steering wheel when compared to an axle mount gear.

Could you have air in the cooling system.  There should be a bleed valve in the highest part of the system where you can bleed off any air.

Dave,

If it isn't a Sheppard PS please cancel all the stuff I said about using motor oil, I have no idea what a PB system uses but that won't be hard for you to find out.

Kyle's explanation makes more sense than mine so I'll go with that but we both agree that running without a thermostat is usually not a good idea.
