I have a 68 mci with a 8-71.is there a shutoff mechanism when the engine kverheats?

I think stalling can be from several issues.
Lack of steady fuel, over heating, faulty valve etc...
Thankfully there are several guys here who know alot more than I who can help.

Mike; On the Mci 8 I had it would shut down on over heat    or low oil pressure    or low fuel pressure    The shut down was thru a air cyl that would close the throttle down mounted top near rear doors on engine.

I have an MC5A and yes it has an overtemp shutoff. There are many factors in the cooling system for these older buses. If you have shutterstats they are air operated but signaled by engine temperature. You have baffles in the blowers, air operated too, which close for a warmup period but should open when the engine is up to temperature.

There is a temperature switch on each cylinder head which will send a signal to the air shutdown should the engine go beyond normal operating temperatures.

You should have a Maintenance Manual and become familiar with these systems and how to test them before you stray too far from home.

You don't say if it is overheating?

If it isn't you probably have a clogged fuel filter, very common on most diesel engines.

with all the panic trying to get the bus restarted, I did not get a good look at the temp gauge. my first assumption was fuel ,so I rushed off to get some fuel to move the bus to the side of the rode.When I did get it started( less than 10 mins later) she ran fine and did not stall again. I am hoping I was just clumbsy and somehow hit the emergency shutoff while I was stopped and talking to a buddy. I will attempt to take her out for a drive today and keep a good eye on all the gauges .

Sometimes these old girls just burp(shutdown) for no good reason.or at least one hard to find. I had a 8 that on occasion that would do it about a quarter mile from home when leaving on a trip, once.    Then- Once restarted it was good for the trip. Funny thing it wouldn't do it on the way home to the barn.?   Ghost?  Best to ck out all possibilities!    Good luck  PS NC Bob It was vague .I never did figure the problem out . It probably did it a dozen times over two years and then just quit and never did it again.

My 4104 once would lose so much power I had to stop sometimes and it wouldn't climb hills very well. To make a long story short the primary fuel filter was leaking air through the gasket and was sucking air. Once tightened the filter was more it ran fine.l

dirty air filter will also cause it to shut down too!
