I am just about to finish redoing the bedroom on my MC5B and I need to address a shifting problem and a parking brake that will not release. First I need to release the brake so I can move the bus to a location I can work on it better. We jacked and blocked it up yesterday and my son noticed that the right brake drum had a couple of crack in it. I do not have a parts manual for the MC5B so I need to get the correct numbers so I can order the new drum. I have not pulled the left side yet because one of my 20 ton jack seems to be bad.  I will be getting a new one but one thing at a time.
Part 2 of this question is where is the best place to learn more about the braking system used on the MC5B? Is there a good book on the subject? Is the same system used on the MC8 models?
Any help in these areas will be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for responding. Maybe I can get them locally and not have to order them from MCI or Mohawk. I still would like to learn more about how the brake system on the MC5B works because I have the problem of the parking brake not releasing properly. Thanks again.

Gene, Are you pushing the release down waiting to hear the air dump off and appling the foot brake pedal? There is also plenty of info on early posts. Tom Y

Yes, I finall got the parking brake to release and I got the right drum off. I also got 2 new air powered low profile jacks so I can work on it better. I was in the process of shopping for drums locally when some friends called to borrow my tandem trailer. I had to help them unload it and now I can start on my own stuff. I still have a shifting problem, but that will have to wait until I get back from the upcoming trip. The bus will stay home this time. Thanks for all your advice.

Yesterday I took the drum off and today I was able to go shopping locally for a new drum. All the part numbers are rusted off so we had to go by measurements and that brought us a Webb 64009F Drum. So far no one has been able to locate any and NAPA told me if they have go to Webb with a special order it will cost $600 per drum. Next I went to Precision Truck parts and one of the older guy looked at the number and said that was a drum from an old bus. I started feeling better because he knew what it was for, but he made calls to several of his suppliers and came up empty. They will do more research tomorrow but he gave me an estimated cost of $400-$450 per drum. Before I checked locally, I called MCI parts but I was on hold 15 minutes and then they asked for my number so they can call me back in the next 24 hours. Mohawk needs an MCI part number, which I do not have yet so I am still looking for an MCI number. I need to find a good MC5B Parts manual. Last time I checked with MCI they did not have any.

The MCI part number for a rear drum for a MCI MC-5C is 15C-3-6.  About a 99% chance that your drum is the same as a 5C drum.

Did my discussion of reverse gear engaging help any, in your other thread?

It is almost the same drum as a Eagle except it is wider get the Webb number from Ed at Jefferson or Luke then buy a after market drum that is way to much cash for a drum I think the 5C uses the same as a MCI 9 pretty standard truck drum if you live in the Dallas area Southwest Wheel can match the drum for you (sorry see you live in CA) other mfg besides Webb fwiw

good luck

That part number that Brian posted is the same for my 68 5A.
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Is that a 10 inch wide drum ? I looked at my parts book and it shows 3 different rear drums for the MCI 5 from 9 inch up to 11 inches wide 2 are out of production so what is new, at 600 bucks each for drums if you rebuilt the DD3 and new shoes a brake job on the rear would cost a small fortune on the bus

Thanks for all your assistance. I got through to MCI this morning and I got a lot of the part numbers and other information I needed. The drums are available from MCI at $307.55 each. I will wait until I am on the way home from our Trip to Oregon & Northern California before I order them. I will not be here to receive them until second week in July. As far as the shifting problem, I will hold off on that until I solve the tree roots in the sewer line problem. My wife thinks that is a higher priority at this time. The bus is not going to be moved until I get the brakes back together anyway.
