wind shield replacement

Any body ever change their own wind shield on an mci 5a? I need to replace the rubber seals. mike

Don't know if they are like the Buffalo's or not but, if they are, piece of cake! I bought a tool from Luke and it takes minutes to do one. An extra set of hands helps but if you are somewaht agile on a ladder, no problem.

I have replaced windshields on 3 MC-8s and 1 Buffalo. With the right hand tool (and a bottle of dish soap for lubricant), it is a easy job. Jack

This thread brings up an issue I have been wondering about so now I'll ask. The windshields in my bus are getting foggy all around the bottom edges, the gaskets look really old, tired and cracked... even caulked in a few places. So since it is supposed to be so easy I guess I could order the special tool from Luke but who has the windshield glass?

I have a 76 MC8.

Foggy edges usually mean the glass is delaminating. My windshields were delaminating and had to be replaced. I have read that a lot of people order MCI windshields from MCI parts. I think MCI still has free freight over $100.

A local bus garage or a local charter bus company that has been in business a while might have an MC-8 windshield they want to sell.

check the prices Coach Glass may be cheaper than MCI on the glass and gaskets check the web they may have a location close to you the tools you can buy at Habor Freight also

I got gaskets from Luke and the glass from a local company that does cars, etc.

When you compare prices, be sure to ask about shipping and crating charges. When I purchased my windshields, Curved Glass was cheaper but when you added shipping and crating, they were more expensive than MCI. Jack

Coach Glass has a tech section you guys with buses should read www.coachglass.com I mention them because you can buy the gaskets and glass both at one place and plus their glass is made in the USA not Mexico

its interesting that these Portland guys say to use the old gasket if it appears OK.

Foggy edges give it more class!!

However, dried out gaskets give you leaks.

Be very careful with old glass, it is very brittle and cracks easily.

I haven't done a front yet but I've done the 4104 rear two times. The front looks much easier to me because the rear is so high off the ground and the center piece is so heavy. Also the two small side glasses are a pain.

Don't even think of doing this without the tool. It is hard enough with the tool

Looks like we have several choices when it comes to possibilities for windshield glass. I'm in Lexington, so shipping from Louisville should not be bad from MCI. i checked out coach glass and added them to my bus bookmarks (thx luvrbus). The still have MC8 in their listing and they have a location in Indiana, so not too far from Ky. I'll also ask my friend at the local charter bus company if he has any left over, just in case.
