Sean...not trying to be argumentative here...any 'Revenue enhancement agent' out here that deals with truck safety 'thinks' they have a right to inspect any vehicle, 'in the name of safety'.
I was trying to chase one of our own nicest looking conversions down in GA recently, almost caught him, I had to go in the scales.  At that moment in time a GA DOT revenue enhancement agent ran to his SUV, went sideways out of there, almost hit a truck in the rear on the accelleration lane and there he was with our friend pulled over at the next exit.  I do not know what happened...I hope to in a few days at the Southeast Bus Nuts Rally.

You're right, but, as I said, that is a matter of state and not federal law.  And so who can pull you over and what they can write you for varies widely state by state.

You suggested that Ray LaHood could make changes such as mandating inspections for RVs, but he can't, because the federal government can not regulate non-commercial vehicles.  Only the states can do that.

Some states see RVs as essentially no different from trucks, while other states see them as essentially no different from cars.  I don't doubt that, as RVs get ever larger and heavier, and as the amount of damage and injury they cause grows, some states may decide to start inspecting RVs and mandating that they stop at inspection and weigh stations.  But today, the magnitude of the problem is so small, that it is unlikely to get any attention from state legislators.  What is most likely to change that is a high-profile case such as someone with a class-C license driving a 50,000-lb coach wiping out a family of four in a crash.

I use these nut covers:

http://www.westcoastmall.net/alcoa-bulk-hex-lug-nut-cover-p-2959.html

and this hub cap

http://www.75chromeshop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_76_160_169&products_id=1426

for the tag and steer on my 89 Prevost XL with 22.5 stud pilot aluminum wheels.  I have never had a problem with these nut covers coming off.  I went through a few of the center caps before I found this one that fit.  Most have tabs that are too deep.  The problem with this one is that it is chrome plated steel and not stainless, it lasts about a year before it starts to get pitted.  I should probably try waxing them to see if it would prevent the pitting...   I used to have these hub covers - http://orrcointernational.com/PDF/Spec%20Data%20Guide%20-%20ENGLISH.pdf, but the screw-on nut covers would not stay on, and it got expensive real quick replacing the various parts that fell off.  Still looking for a drive hub cover though...

Contributing to the dual streams...

I think the biggest threat are the large number of entertainer coaches that are breaking the law by running as rv's.

These guys are hired help, running hard, fast and long, with no log books, no vehicle inspections, etc.

We will get caught up in the sweep when they go after the outlaws, and depending on what they find... may trigger further interest...

stay invisible, and keep the coach maintained.

happy coaching!

I was in Nashville recently.  The major entertainer leasing outfits are (or soon will be) going legal.  Most already have their USDOT numbers and are following the regs (more or less).  The lower tier cars are going to be forced to join in also.
